Hartwick soccer to take on Syracuse

The Hartwick College men's soccer team will play its first home game since Oct. 7, when Syracuse University plays a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore Field.

The Hawks (7-7) come into the game after a 1-0 loss to 23rd-ranked Penn State on Friday. Meanwhile, Syracuse (7-5-1) fell 4-0 to seventh-ranked St. John's on the same night.

After scoring 12 goals in the first four games, Hartwick has just nine goals in the last 10 games. The Hawks are 2-4 in 1-0 games this season.

Junior midfielder Jonathan Westmaas leads Hartwick with three goals and five assists for 11 points. Sophomore forward Rob Catana is second in scoring with four goals and one assist.

Junior goalkeeper Randall Moate was named the Atlantic Soccer Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time this season on Monday. He has a 0.78 goals-against average and a .815 save percentage. His 5-3 record this season includes three 1-0 losses (including one on a penalty kick).

The Hawks have played well in the second half of games this year, outscoring the opponent by a 13-3 margin. However, Hartwick has been outscored 7-6 in the first half.

Syracuse was ranked 18th in the country before losing to St. John's and falling out of the national poll. The Orangemen have wins against Rutgers (3-2), Army (4-2), Pittsburgh (4-1), Villanova (4-1), Providence (5-0), Colgate (3-2) and Adelphi (3-0). SU also has losses to Connecticut (3-1), Virginia Tech (2-0), Old Dominion (3-2), Boston College (5-1) and has a 2-2 tie with Seton Hall.

Sophomore forward Kirk Johnson leads the Orangemen with 11 goals and seven assists for 29 points. Matt Torok (six goals) and Jarett Park (five goals) are other offensive threats for head coach Dean Foti, who is an Oneonta High School graduate.

Syracuse has also been a slow starting team. The Orangemen have been outscored 13-8 in the opening half, but have a 24-14 advantage in the second half and overtime.

Hartwick played one of its best games of the season last year in a 3-0 victory at Syracuse. Catana had two goals and Kevin Saunders had the other score for Hartwick, which has a 13-9-3 lead in the series.
