O-State will have three earn all-state

D. Winn has title shot

Staff Report

Three Oneonta State wrestlers will earn all-state accolades at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships, which began Friday and continues at 11 a.m. Saturday in Oswego.

Brothers Dustin and Greg Winn, who are Bainbridge-Guilford graduates, and teammate Otis Place are guaranteed to finish within the top eight wrestlers in their respective weight classes. The top eight finishers in each class earn all-state honors.

Freshman Dustin Winn is the only O-State wrestler with a chance at winning a title at the meet, which has 23 colleges spanning all NCAA divisions in competition.

Sixth-seeded Winn earned a 4-0 decision in his 141-pound opener, then defeated Jason Layton of Nassau Community College, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals of the championship round. Layton defeated the No. 3 seed at 141 pounds in his opener.

Winn started with an 11-4 victory over Brandon Benson, avenging a 3-2 loss to the New York University wrestler a week earlier during a quad meet at Rhode Island College.

Winn, a two-time Section Four champion and a state champion as a high school junior, can place no lower than sixth after competition is completed on Saturday.

Greg Winn split decisions over his first two matches, which included a 21-6 loss to Hofstra's Tom Noto, the No. 1 seed at 125 pounds.

Winn, the ninth seed, came back with a pin of Brockport's Joe Konlan in 5 minutes, 32 seconds during a consolation-round match. That victory qualified Winn for the placing round, where he can finish no higher than third, but no lower than eighth.

Place also lost one of his first two matches, at 157 pounds, but qualified for the placing round with a 7-6 overtime defeat of RIT's Matt LoSchavio. No. 7 Place, who fell to second-seeded Paul Siemon of Hofstra, 6-3, will finish between third and eighth place as a result.

Cornell University, Hofstra and Army have taken the top three positions in the team standings after the first day of competition.
