O-State women win third straight; men edged by Buffalo State, 61-60

B-G's Winn brothers finish in top five at state wrestling meet

Oneonta State won its third straight women's basketball game on Saturday at Alumni Field House, scoring the first six points of a 62-35 victory over SUNY Athletic Conference leader Buffalo State.

The Red Dragons moved to 7-8 overall and 5-4 in the SUNYAC. Buffalo State fell to 12-3 and 6-1, respectively.

O-State senior Kristin Lemon scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in the first half, when Oneonta took a 37-6 lead into intermission.

Lemon converted four of her game-high five 3-pointers in the half, when the Bengals shot 3-for-25 and committed 17 turnovers.

Freshman Allie Sullivan contributed 10 points for the Red Dragons, who received 10 rebounds and eight points from senior forward Alena Seabrook.

O-State plays a non-conference game at Cazenovia at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Men's Basketball

Buffalo State 61, O-State 60

Senior forward Bob Kelly missed a banker at the buzzer as the Red Dragons lost a SUNYAC game to visiting Buffalo State on Saturday at Alumni Field House.

Oneonta, which brought a two-game SUNYAC winning streak into the game, fell to 6-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference. The Bengals improved to 10-3 and 6-1, respectively.

Junior forward Shaun Bauer converted a three-point play with 3 minutes, 17 seconds left to play to give O-State its only lead of the second half, at 58-57.

After a 29-29 tie at the half, Buffalo State took a 57-48 lead before Bauer capped a 10-0 run for Oneonta on the three-point play.

Sophomore guard Kurt Troyer led Oneonta with 15 points, junior guard Rashad Clark contributed 13, Bauer finished with 12 and Kelly had 11.

Senior forward David Micha grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds for Oneonta as well. All of Micha's rebounds came at the defensive end.

Oneonta finished 8-for-22 from 3-point range, with Troyer hitting 3 of 9 to lead the Red Dragons.

Senior forward Pat Adams paced the Bengals with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Oneonta plays host to a non-conference game against Keuka at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Wrestling

Winns, Place earn all-state

O-State wrestlers Greg Winn, Dustin Winn and Otis Place finished among the top seven wrestlers in their respective weight classes to earn all-state honors at the 33rd annual New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Oswego State.

All three athletes qualified for all-state status on Friday and won matches on Saturday. The top eight wrestlers in each weight class earned all-state accolades.

Oneonta junior Greg Winn finished fifth at 125 pounds after receiving a victory by medical forfeit over Stacy Menefee of Nassau County Community College. Freshman Dustin Winn also won by medical forfeit, over Cornell's Byron Warner, to place fifth at 141 pounds.

The Winn brothers are Bainbridge-Guilford graduates.

Place finished seventh overall at 157 pounds after defeating Buffalo's Dave Edwards, 4-2.

Oneonta placed 12th (34 points) in the 23-team tournament, which Cornell won with 207.5 points. Cornell's Travis Lee received Most Outstanding Wrestler honors after winning the 125-pound weight class.

Delhi Tech (2.5 points) and SUNY-Cobleskill, which failed to score a point, finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
