Hawks sweep in basketball

Hurley moves into eighth for all-time scoring; swimmers beat Alfred U.

Oneonta High graduate Tiffany Hurley finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds and five steals to lead the Hartwick College women's basketball team to its third straight victory, a 58-47 Empire 8 Conference triumph over host Utica College on Saturday.

Hurley, the Empire 8 Player of the Week last week, was 6-for-9 from the field and 7-for-8 from the foul line. Hurley moved into eighth place on the all-time scoring list at Hartwick with 1,131 points, passing Gina Burrows (1,115). She is also tied for third in all-time rebounding at Hartwick, matching 1985 graduate Paula Green's total of 892 after Saturday's game.

Stephanie Clough contributed 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting and had a team-high five assists for Hartwick (7-6, 2-1 E8). Jessica Dakin had 10 points and six rebounds for the Hawks, who led at the half, 29-19.

Alicia Ventresca had 10 points to pace the Pioneers (6-6, 1-2), which received nine points from Walton graduate Libby LePinnet.

Hartwick plays another league game at 6 p.m. Tuesday against visiting Elmira College.

Men's Basketball

Hartwick 71, Utica 67

Joel Blackwell finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals as Hartwick won for the first time in Empire 8 Conference play by defeating host Utica College on Saturday.

The Hawks (4-10, 1-2 E8) got seven offensive rebounds and 8-for-16 shooting from Blackwell. James Altman contributed 15 points and five assists, and had one turnover at point guard. Ira Wiley had 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting and five assists for the Hawks, who received 13 points and five rebounds from Nate Cramer.

The Hawks shot 7-for-14 from 3-point range, including a 2-for-2 effort from Blackwell; Wiley was 2-for-3 and Altman was 3-for-7.

Patrick O'Connor paced the Pioneers (2-10, 0-3) with 21 points, 15 rebounds and four assists.

Hartwick plays host to Elmira at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Swimming

Hartwick beats Alfred U.

Hartwick's men won for the third time in two days, beating Alfred University, 141-100, on Saturday at Moyer Pool. The Hawks' women also routed the Saxons, with three swimmers winning two events apiece in a 140-85 victory.

John Brennan paced Hartwick's men (5-6), who beat Cortland State and Oneonta State on Friday, by winning the 200 butterfly (2:03.70), the 500 freestyle (5:05.61) and the 1,650 free (5:05.61). Chris Maiello won the 100 free (48.40) and the 200 free (48.40); Robert Nelson took the 200 individual medley (2:04.05) and the 200 breaststroke (2:17.44); and Miguel Vargas won the 50 free in 22.45.

Adam Torrey, an Oneonta High graduate, added a second in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.52).

Tara Griffith was a winner in the 50 free (25.48) and the 100 free (56.59) for the Hartwick women (6-5). Danielle Moreau captured the 200 backstroke (2:15.62) and the 200 free (2:04.59), and Julie Landmann won the 200 butterfly (2:16.85) and the 1,650 free (19:24.32). Emily Seagrave contributed a victory in the 200 individual medley (2:23.70), and Shannon Costa won the 500 free (5:42.70) for Hartwick as well.

Oneonta High graduate Erica Torrey finished second in the 200 IM (2:26.41) and the 200 butterfly (2:26.57). Fellow OHS grad Tara Rothenberger was part of the winning 400 medley relay team of Moreau, Landmann and Gayle Gregory.

Both Hartwick teams swim at home against St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
