Oneonta soccer teams shine in Norwich
Two 10-and-under Oneonta soccer teams finished 1-2 in a tournament at the Family Soccer Center in Norwich.
The Oneonta Gold team defeated the Oneonta Blue team, 6-3, in the title game.
In the championship game, Cory Hunter, Dan Baker, Paul Lentz and Dale Schoolcraft scored for Oneonta Gold. Tyler Southard and Kyle McCue scored for the blue.
Oneonta Blue, coached by David Joseph and Jim McCue, consisted of Thomas Brindley, Ryan Gracy, Jacob Joseph, Kyle McCue, Alex Meschutt,Logan Osterhoudt, Rocco Parrella, Alex Paolicelli, and Tyler Southard. Oneonta Gold, coached by Pat Tyson and Greg Krikorian, consisted of Matt Arcidiacono, Daniel Baker, Daniel Drake, Aaron Forman, Cory Hunter, Trevor Kosturock, Zach Krikorian, Paul Lentz, Dale Schoolcraft, and Brendan Wolfanger. Oneonta Blue took second place in the tournament with four victories (3-1, 5-3, 10-1 and 11-0). Oneonta Gold took first place with three victories (1-3, 11-1, 7-4, 7-3).
In Oneonta Blue's first game against the Gold, Alex Meschutt, Ryan Gracy, Jacob Joseph and Dale Schoolcraft scored goals.
Softball practice set for Sunday
The Silver Gloves, a 45-and-over women's softball team, invites new players to come to their opening indoor practice from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Norwich Middle School.
The Gloves are four-time state gold medalists and have twice competed in national tournaments.
The team plans on playing at least four tournaments; Syracuse, Cortland, Penn Hills , Pa., and Dorchester, Canada.

Basketball playoffs back at Glens Falls
For the 22nd consecutive year, the Glens Falls Civic Center will play host to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys' Basketball Championships and the New York State Federation Basketball Tournament of Champions.
These tournaments consist of 25 games over five days.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys' Basketball Championships will be March 15-17.
The New York State Federation Basketball Tournament of Champions will be March 22-23. The Federation Tournament will determine the ultimate Champions by bringing together the champions of the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA), the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), the Association of Independent Schools (AIS), and the Public School Athletic league (PSAL). General admission tickets are $8 per day.

Applications being accepted for camp
Applications are now being evaluated for The Ten-Star All-Star Summer Basketball Camp. The Camp is by Invitation only. Boys and Girls ages 10-19 are eligible to apply.
Past participants include Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, and Antawn Jamison. Players from 48 states and seven Foreign Countries attended the 2001 Camp.
College Basketball Scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American team. Cortland to conduct youth baseball clinic
Area youths will have the opportunity to hone their baseball skills at one of two indoor clinics conducted by the Cortland State coaching staff and team. The first Cortland Baseball Little League Clinic for players ages 8-12 will be held on Feb. 24, while the 14th annual baseball clinic for ages 13-18 will be held on March 3.
Each clinic will be conducted at Cortland's Lusk Fieldhouse, between the school's baseball and football fields. Registration for the Little League clinic is from 8:30-9 a.m. with the clinic running from 9 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. The cost of the clinic is $30 per player, which is payable at the door.
Registration for the clinic for players ages 13-18 is from 9-10 a.m. with the clinic running from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The cost per player is $45, and is also payable at the door. Teams sending eight or more players can receive a special rate of $40 per player by calling the Cortland baseball office in advance at 753-4950 or 753-5530.

Soccer clinic at O-State on Saturday
Oneonta State head soccer coach Ian McIntrye invites all players between the ages of 6-14 to join his coaches and players for a three-hour soccer clinic. The clinic is from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday at Oneonta State's Alumni Field House.
The cost is $10 and each participant should bring indoor footwear, shin guards, and soccer attire. Refreshments will be on sale throughout the evening. For more information contact Lain Byrne at 436-2109.
Racing starts soon at Hunter Mountain
The 2002 Hunter Mountain racing season opens with the Fifth Annual Police Winter Games on Jan. 23-25. The race is open to all law enforcement officers from New York State and the East Coast, and consists of downhill, slalom, and giant slalom events. Donations at the race support "Variety, The Children's Charity." Teams are pre-registered for the race and winners will be announced nightly at ceremonies closing each race day.
The 29th Annual FDNY Firefighters Races will follow the Police games. The Firefighter's races are the longest running Hunter Mountain event of their kind. On Jan. 29, five-man teams of FDNY's finest will race down the slopes in full turnout gear and carrying a fire hose. The winners of the FDNY races will go onto compete the next day at the 20th Annual East Coast Firefighter's races. The East Coast events are open to any Fire company outside of New York City and on the Eastern Coast.
The FDNY competition supports the New York Burn Center.
The final event on the racing calendar is the 21st Annual Nurse's Race on Feb. 28. Teams of two nurses will race to the rescue sporting their scrubs and carrying a litter. The event commences with an outrageous obstacle event in the snow tubing park.
