OHS girls win fifth in a row, beat JC, 55-34

Jefferson, Edmeston win tight games

Staff Report

Meghan Stetson made two 3-pointers and Nikki Shackelton scored five points in the first quarter Monday, helping Oneonta to a 55-34 girls basketball victory over Southern Tier Athletic Conference guest Johnson City.

Oneonta, winners of six straight, led 21-5 after one quarter and 33-13 at halftime. Shackelton finished with 13 points and teammates Stetson, Erika Blatz and Megan Nader each scored eight.

Melissa Manzor scored 15 points for the Wildcats.

The Yellowjackets will play host to Maine-Endwell on Friday in a makeup game. The junior varsity game will start at 5 p.m., with the varsity to follow.

Jefferson 40, Milford 39

Host Jefferson built 12-point halftime lead and held off a late Milford rally to win the Delaware League game.

Brianne Staggs scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the second half for Milford.

"She pretty much carried them in the second half," Jefferson coach John Toroni said.

Stacey Latella led Jefferson with 12 points, and Katie Carrol scored seven points to go along with a game-high 14 rebounds.

Hannah Tirado scored 15 points, and Danielle Fein and Erika Robbins each had 14 in Laurens' Tri-Valley League victory at Worcester. Laurens led, 22-8, after one quarter.

Bethany Head scored 18 points for Worcester, which went 9-for-30 from the foul line.

Worcester plays at Schenevus on Wednesday.

Edmeston 40, Stamford 37

Danielle Barton scored a game-high 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Edmeston's Tri-Valley League victory over visiting Stamford.

Edmeston outscored Stamford, 16-4, in the second quarter to take 19-6 halftime lead.

"We picked up the intensity in the second, we put our press on, it got us some turnovers, and we were able to get some layups," said Edmeston coach Gloria Smith.

Mary Velan led Stamford with eight points and Erica Gregory grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

LaToya Watson scored 10 of her game-high 25 points in the first quarter, when Catskill took control against visiting Windham. Many of Watson's points came off steals that led to layups.

Jean Aplin scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Windham, which plays host to Margaretville on Wednesday.
