UV girls win play-in, shot at unbeaten Sidney; Unatego boys advance

Unadilla Valley limited visiting Cherry Valley-Springfield to eight first-half points on its way to a 44-34 girls basketball victory in a Section Four Class C Tournament play-in game.

For the triumph, UV's prize is a date with undefeated and top-ranked Sidney (20-0) on Wednesday.

Amanda Walling had seven points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals for the Storm (12-8). Crystal Petry led UV with 12 points, eight of which came in the first half.

Melissa Kehoe had 14 points for CV-S, which ends the season at 11-8.

Boys Basketball

Unatego 69, Tioga 64

B.J. Carson scored the go-ahead basket off a steal in the final minute to lift the Spartans over Tioga in a Section Four Class C play-in game.

Carson's basket made it 64-62 and Aaron Brunner hit four free throws late to seal it. Carson led Unatego (12-9) with 21 points.

The Spartans came back from a 31-24 halftime deficit thanks to a 26-11 third quarter. Carson score nine of his points and Justin Harris eight of his 16 in the period.

Barry Klossner had 21 points for Tioga before getting ejected in the third quarter.

Unatego, the 15th seed, will visit second-seeded Delhi (19-1) on Tuesday.

Lansing 66, UV 56

Lansing ended visiting Unadilla Valley's season with a victory in a Section Four Class C play-in game.

UV's Dave Mayne had a game-high 21 points, but Lansing used a 20-9 second quarter to pull away from the Storm. UV cut the lead to six on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, but it could not get any closer.

"They switched to a man-to-man defense in the middle quarters and things kind of went downhill from there," Storm coach John Jackson said.

UV (11-8) hit eight 3s, including four by Mayne.

Zack Guardagno led Lansing (10-10) with 15 points.

at Mid-Way Lanes

Oneonta placed seventh out of 12 teams in the Section Four Class B Tournament in Vestal. The Yellowjackets rolled team series of 951, 928 and 903 for a pinfall of 2,782. Chenango Valley won the B team title with 3,134 pins.

In Class C, Sidney and Walton placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Sidney finished with 2,813 pins and Walton 2,680. Bainbridge-Guilford was 11th in the 14-team event, at 2,416 pins. Odessa-Montour won the team title with 2,973 pins.

Swimming

at Owego

Oneonta had one top-six finish at the Section Four Class B Championships, placing sixth in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:54.34. The Yellowjackets were eighth out of 12 teams with 123 points. Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton finished 11th at 36 points. Chenango Forks won the team title with 413 points.
