B-G graduate finishes second in wrestling
Staff Report
Bainbridge-Guilford graduate Dustin Winn earned the highest finish for host Oneonta State at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships on Saturday.
Winn received an alternate bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament after losing the championship match at 141 pounds. Top-seeded Winn fell to No. 2 Marc Israel of Ithaca College, 4-2, in sudden death overtime. Winn was the only Oneonta State wrestler to reach the championships.
The 10 ECWC champions automatically advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament, along with five wild-card selections. Winn was one of two alternates selected. Alternates can compete if one or more of the original 15 selected cannot.
The NCAA Division III Tournament is slated for March 1-2 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Ithaca won the team title with 87 points, dethroning two-time defending champion Brockport, which finished 12 points behind.
Ithaca won four weight classes, led by senior Ryan Ciotoli, who became the first wrestler in ECWC history to win four consecutive championships. Ciotoli and freshman Bryan Steele, who earned Most Outstanding Wrestler accolades, helped the Bombers to their first ECWC title since 1995.
