Delhi tip-toes past Oxford; Sidney remains undefeated
Staff Report
Missy Oliver tipped away the last Oxford opportunity with virtually no time remaining as the host Delhi girls basketball team won a first-round Section Four Class C game, 43-40, Wednesday night.
The sixth-seeded Bulldogs (15-5) advanced to play No. 3 Edison in a Class C quarterfinal Saturday. Edison knocked off defending state champion and No. 14 seed Lansing, 65-41, Wednesday.
Oxford (11-10), the 11th seed, missed three shots in the last 15 seconds after Jill Post cut the Delhi advantage to the final score on an off-balance 3-pointer.
Delhi turned the ball over once and missed two front ends of 1-and-1 free throw opportunities to keep Oxford in the game.
Oliver grabbed her last rebound with 8.2 seconds left and was fouled. She missed the free throw, which Post tracked down before throwing to teammate Sara Chrystie in the middle of the floor. Chrystie passed to Jessy Nelson, whose 3-pointer hit off the back rim. Oliver tipped the rebound out of bounds as time expired.
"The clock ran out and we escaped," Delhi coach Dick Alwine said. "It was a close game. The biggest lead we had was eight points."
Post finished with a game-high 12 points for Oxford. Kelly Hilson scored 11 points to lead Delhi, which received four steals from Amber Sohns.
