O-Tigers fall in 9th, 5-4
Go 1-for-3 against Jammers; NASCAR driver to appear at Damaschke tonight
Staff Report
Everett Hancock lost control in a tough situation Sunday.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, left-handed Hancock threw his first wild pitch this season, allowing the Jamestown Jammers to earn a 5-4 victory over the Oneonta Tigers.
After losing two of three to Jamestown (15-18), Oneonta (21-12) returns to Damaschke Field at 7 tonight to start a two-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats. The O-Tigers hold a seven-game lead over Tri-City in the Stedler Division.
NASCAR driver Jeff Burton is scheduled to appear at tonight's game, which is Mirabito Fuel/Mang Insurance Night. Burton, who finished 12th at Sunday's New England 300, is expected to be at the game from 6-8 p.m.
Hancock yielded his first earned run in his fifth inning pitched this summer, resulting in his first loss. He followed reliever Ross Koenig, who pitched two scoreless innings.
Eric Reed opened Jamestown's ninth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Ordorica. Hancock walked Kevin Randel and hit Joe Apotheker to load the bases for Phil Hartig. Hancock's first pitch to Hartig got past catcher Luke Carlin as Reed scored the winner.
The Tigers tied the score at 4 with a two-run seventh that gave starting pitcher Luis Diaz a no-decision. Robert Watson and Jody Roughton started the rally with back-to-back doubles, the latter cutting Jamestown's lead to 4-3. Roughton moved to third when Virgilio DeLeon grounded out, then scored on a single by Drew Caravella.
Diaz (3-1) allowed a two-run homer to left by Ordorica in the first inning, but Oneonta tied the score with the combination of an RBI single by Corey Loomis in the fourth and a run-scoring blooper by DeLeon in the fifth.
After walking the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth, Diaz gave up a two-run, two-out double to Andy Rohleder.
DeLeon led all batters with a 3-for-4 effort, including a run and an RBI. He also stole three bases. Watson was the only other player with more than one hit, finishing 2-for-5.
Oneonta left the bases loaded in the second as Jamestown starter Ryan Warpinski struck out Loomis and Carlin looking to end the inning.
Yorman Bazardo, the Jammers third and final pitcher, earned the victory after two scoreless innings.
