Wilkes named D-III All-American

Hartwick College field hockey player Tara Wilkes was honored as an STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III All-American on Monday.

Wilkes, a junior forward, was named to the third team. She led the Hawks to a 14-5 record, and helped the team receive a bid to play in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Tournament. Wilkes had eight goals and five assists for 21 points.

Wilkes has received numerous accolades for her performance this season. She was named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year and was named to the all-conference first team after leading the Hawks to a 4-0 record in conference play. Wilkes earned New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) first-team honors, and was selected to the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) North Atlantic Region All-American first-team last week.

Wilkes is ranked in a tie for seventh place in all-time scoring at Hartwick with 78 points. Her 32 goals are seventh all-time, and she is 15th in all-time assists with 14. As a sophomore, Wilkes started all 20 games and led the Hawks in scoring with 47 points.

Weekly honors

Hartwick basketball players Joel Blackwell and Matt Guzielek received weekly conference accolades from the Empire 8 on Monday.

Gayle Gregory, a member of the women's swimming and diving team, was named Hartwick College/McDonald's Athlete of the Week for her performance in a dual meet on Saturday at Hamilton.

Blackwell was named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week for his play in the Holiday Inn Tip-Off Classic last weekend at Oneonta State. He was named the MVP of the tournament after leading Hartwick (2-0) to the title with two overtime victories. Blackwell, a senior forward, scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 96-93 triumph over the hosts in the first round on Saturday, and followed with 29 points and 12 rebounds in a 75-73 victory over Westfield State in the championship game on Sunday. He shot 51.2 percent from the field, averaging 29.5 points, 12 rebounds and three assists per game.

Guzielek, a freshman guard, was named Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week for his performance in two Hartwick victories. He had 14 points, four assists and two steals in his first collegiate game against Oneonta State, including a key 3-pointer in overtime. In the championship game, Guzielek made three 3-pointers and chipped in with 13 points. He added two assists, two rebounds and one block in helping the Hawks to the title.

Gregory earned athlete of the week honors after winning won five events overall for the women's swimming and diving team (3-3). Gregory won the 1,000 freestyle (10:59.41) and the 500 freestyle (5:19.70) against both schools. She added a victory against Hamilton in the 100 freestyle with a 56.39 clocking. In addition, Gregory has already posted 13 victories for the Hawks this season.
