Area Sports Briefs Soccer Hall announces media award

The National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta has established the Colin Jose Media Award to recognize members of the media who have made significant contributions to the game throughout their writing and/or broadcasting careers.

The award, named for journalist and historian Colin Jose, will be considered annually, but not necessarily given annually, the Hall announced.

Nominees may be submitted via e-mail to the Hall of Fame Director of Communications Jack Huckel. Nominations for the initial award will be accepted until Sept. 1.

A select committee will review the nominations and choose the first winner of the award. Award recipients will join the committee to help choose future winners.

Premier soccer tryouts start today

[an error occurred while processing this directive]The premier soccer teams from the B.C. United and the Southern Tier Fusion will merge into one organization — the B.C. United Fusion — under the direction of Binghamton University coach Paul Marco.

Tryouts for youth players residing within a 50-mile radius of Binghamton University will be held today through Friday at the B.C. United Soccer Complex, 1351 Union Center-Maine Highway in West Corners (behind the Ann G. McGuinness Elementary).

Local TV sports show debuts Thursday

Hometown Sports, a half-hour local sports show, will debut at 9:30 p.m. Thursday on Time Warner Cable channel 23.

Hometown Sports will showcase local, professional, amateur and high school sports from the Chenango, Delaware and Otsego counties.

Hometown Sports will air weekly, with a special high school football preview set to air Sept. 2. For more information, visit the website www.htownsportstv.com.

Section Four rules meetings start Thurs.

Section Four will hold interpretation meetings for fall high school sports around central New York on the following dates.

6:30 p.m. Thursday: Football at Union-Endicott High;

5 p.m. Monday: Field hockey at Brothers II Restaurant in Endwell;

5 p.m. Aug. 22: Soccer at Cortland County Office Building;

7 p.m. Aug. 23: Soccer at Union-Endicott High;

6:30 p.m. Aug. 24: Soccer at Elmira Free Library;

and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25: Soccer at the Oneonta Holiday Inn.

Section Four coaches of all levels are encouraged to attend.

Davenport Fireman’s 5K on Saturday

The second annual Davenport Firemen’s Field Day Run, a 5-kilometer race, starts at 10 a.m. Saturday over an out-and-back course beginning and ending in front of the Charlotte Valley Central School.

Race-day registration is from 8:30-9:45 a.m. in front of the school. Cost for pre-registered runners is $12, and race-day registration is $15. Registration forms may be picked up at various businesses in the area, including Sport Tech and the Oneonta YMCA, or by calling Gary Gundlach at 607-278-5657 or e-mailing him at gundlach@dmcom.net.

Baseball Hall to hold special weekend

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will play host to Special Abilities Weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

Two-time World Series veteran Jim Eisenreich will be featured in a Legends Series event at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The former All-Star will discuss his battle overcoming physical challenges related to Tourrette Syndrome.

• The Baseball Hall will celebrate the life of Ted Williams from Sept. 11-12 with two days of guest speakers, presentations and films.

Glimmerglass Triathlon set for Sunday

The 22nd annual Glimmerglass Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday at Glimmerglass State Park in Cooperstown.

The triathlon includes a 5-mile canoe sprint, a 26-mile bicycle race and a 5-mile run. Registration will be limited to the first 150 entrants. Iron persons, two-, three- and four-person teams are invited to participate.

Ladies bowling league to meet Monday

The annual meeting for the Monday Night Ladies bowling league will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta. Those unable to attend should call Lori at 607-432-5019.

OHS fall practice dates set

Any student-athlete participating in a sport this fall at OHS must fill out a health history questionnaire and have an updated physical. Paperwork should be turned in to the high school health office immediately. For more information, call athletic director Joe Hughes at 607-433-8251.

The starting practice dates for fall sports are as follows:

• Football (varsity/JV): 8 a.m. Aug. 16 at Oneonta High (equipment handed out at 6 p.m. Aug. 10 at OHS)

• Girls soccer (varsity/JV): 8 a.m. Aug. 16 at OHS

• Swimming (varsity): 8-10 a.m., 7-9 p.m. Aug. 16 at OHS

• Cheerleading: 10 a.m. Aug. 16 at OHS

• Golf: 4:30-6:45 p.m. Aug. 16 at Oneonta Country Club

• Boys soccer (varsity/JV): 6 p.m. Aug. 16 at OHS

• Cross country (varsity/modified): 8 a.m. Aug. 23 at OHS

• Football (modified): 2:30 p.m. Sept. 1 at OHS gym

• Swimming (modified): 3 p.m. Sept. 1 at OHS

• Boys soccer (modified): 10 a.m. Sept. 3 at Riverside Elementary

• Girls soccer (modified): 2:35 p.m. Sept. 7 in Room 316 at OHS

Hunter safety course Aug. 27-28

A hunter’s safety course will run from 6-10 p.m. Aug. 27 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 28 in the Oneonta area. Participants must attend both sessions, which have a limited class size.
