THE SMART MONEY

College basketball players aren’t the only ones who take part in Midnight Madness. At one second past midnight last Friday, I was at my local gym for the first time in months. If you say you saw me there you were mistaken, unless you happen to be the girl who checked my ID. The place was deserted.

I later came to the realization, though, that you can’t have vanity and winning forecasts at the same time. Working out severely eats into handicapping preparation time. That’s probably why most people who do this predicting stuff tend to mostly sit around.

What to do? What to do?

After hardly any deliberation, I decided to rededicate myself to not working out. That means that I can get back to my familiar routine of keeping sweat inside my body. Of course, that also means that if I have another losing session I won’t have any ex[an error occurred while processing this directive]cuses, or at least none that immediately come to mind.

In last week’s tally, I missed on the Dolphins, but had solid winners with the Vikings and Rams.

Now for this week’s games:

Bills (+6) over Ravens

This will be the first time in QB Kyle Boller’s two-year pro career that he’ll be turning around in the Baltimore backfield and not stuffing the ball against Jamal Lewis’ shirt (suspension). And, considering the Ravens are ranked next to last in offense even with the defending rushing champ, this unit might struggle for first downs against the Bills’ eighth-ranked unit. I’ll wager $40.

Packers (-3½) over Cowboys

Since the Packers took the fight out of Detroit last week, I’m giving those guys blind credit for turning it around after their miserable loss to Tennessee two weeks ago. And, with both teams weak in pass defense, my vote goes with Brett Favre over Vinny Testaverde. I’ll wager $30.

Carolina (-3) over Chargers

I heard ex-Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson on TV saying it was a chore for West Coast teams to travel to the Eastern time zone and have to play a team in the early Sunday game. I’m not much into jet lag or anything, but apparently other people are. The Chargers are doomed. I’ll wager $25.
