Area Sports Briefs Weil named Cobleskill lacrosse coach

Todd Weil has been named the new men’s lacrosse coach at Cobleskill. Weil, an assistant for Cortland last season, will replace Tim Dobbs.

Cortland was 17-3 last season and reached the NCAA Tournament. Weil was a defender for Cortland from 1995-96 and was a varsity coach at the New York State Military Academy from 1998-2001 and at Trinity-Pawling School from 2002-03.

Syracuse native Weil is the seventh men’s lacrosse coach at Cobleskill and will serve as the director of Cobleskill’s campus fitness center.

Cobleskill athlete of the week

Men’s basketball played Danielle Pierre was named the Cobleskill Athlete of the Week.

Pierre, a 6-foot-7 forward, had 12 points and 19 rebounds in a victory over Cayuga CC. He followed that up with 10 points and six re[an error occurred while processing this directive]bounds against Clinton CC. Cobleskill is 6-0 and ranked 15th in the NJCAA preseason poll.

Unatego to hold alumni basketball game

Over 45 Unatego alumni basketball players have signed up to participate in the first Unatego Booster Club Alumni Men’s basketball games on Nov. 27.

The "Old-Timers" game, for players 36-and-older, is at 6 p.m. The "Fast-Break" game, for alumni 35-and-under, is at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $1 or donate a non-perishable food, health or beauty item.

YMCA gymnastics results

Ariel Powers had a first-place overall finish to lead the Oneonta Family YMCA gymnastics team at a recent meet in Saratoga. Powers was first on the vault, second on the bars and third on beam and floor to win in level 6.

In level 6, child division, Sophie McCarthy was fourth all-around and Abby Dufresne was fifth in the junior division. Emily Brackett was second all-around in level 5, senior division. Addie Schneider was second all-around and Shyah Miller was third in level 4, junior division.

Becca Hunter was third and Mary Hunter fifth in the level 4 senior division.

Delhi wrestlers to use new mat

The Delhi Board of Education purchased a new mat for the Delhi wrestling team to use this season. Delhi opens the season at Spencer Van Etten at noon Nov. 27.

YMCA plays host to open volleyball

The Oneonta YMCA will play host to open volleyball night from 7-9 p.m. on Thursdays in the lower gym. There is a $5 fee to participate. For more information, call the YMCA at 607-432-0010.

Local athletes named to Who’s Who

Twelve local students have been included in the 2003-04 Edition of Who’s Who Among American High School Students - Sports Edition.

The athletes are nominated by coaches, teachers and sports organizations based on athletic achievement and participation in extra curricular activities. Who’s Who - Sports Edition students also compete for $10,000 in scholarships awards.

Hildebrandt named to Soccer Hall Board

A. Thomas Hildebrandt, president of the Hillside and Crestwood Children’s Foundations, has been elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame Board of Directors.

Hildebrandt, a CPA, holds degrees from Wittenburg University and Rochester Institute of Technology.

Calcio Legends to add new soccer team

The Calcio Legends Soccer Club has added a U-16 boys team in Margaretville for the upcoming winter leagues, spring leagues and tournaments.

Former professional Njego Pesa will be part of the coaching staff for the Margaretville team. Pesa, who played professionally in the NASL from 1979-83, will join Don Bramley and Randy Moore as the co-coaches for the team.

Afton Speedway to hold awards banquet

The Afton Speedway will close the 2004 season with its awards banquet from 4:30 p.m.-midnight on Nov. 27 at The River Club in Afton.

Trophy awards will be presented to each 2004 season track champion after the banquet before the event concludes with dancing to the music of Jump Start. Tickets for the event are $30 and must be purchased by Nov. 20. For more information, call Tom Vartanian at 607-753-8512.

Li places second at swim meet

Katalina Li, a member of the Delhi Dolphins swim team, finished second in the girls 8-and-under division 25-yard breaststroke at the Ocean Blue Invitational on Nov. 7 at Union College.

Li also finished fifth in the 100 individual medley in 2 minutes, 9.15 seconds, eighth in the 25 butterfly and ninth in the 50 free.

Jonathan Li was 10th in the boys 13-and-over 100 breaststroke, 15th in the 100 free and 20th in the 50 free. Amy Meriman was 13th in the 50 breaststroke, 14th in the 50 back and 19th in the 50 free in the girls 11-12 year old division. Brittany Meriman was 19th in the 50 free in the same division.

Susquehanna Bass Association results

David DioDato and Chris Potter won the Art-Nathan VanSteenburg Memorial Classic Bass Tournament on Otsego Lake on Oct. 30-31.

DioDato and Potter caught the limit of 10 fish, weighing 28.84 pounds. Bruce Halland and Vince Fink took second with 28.69 pounds. Vic VanSteenburg and Mike Barse were third.

Tom Trelease caught the lunker of the tournament, a small mouth bass weighing 3.71 points. There were a total of 152 fish caught and released.

The Rail wins flag football championship

The Rail won its fourth straight Unadilla Flag Football League championship, 31-12, over Amerian Legion on Nov. 7.

Its the seventh championship in eight years for the Rail. In the past four seasons, the Rail has lost one game and has won 20 games in a row.

Clark Sports Center accepting registrations

The Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown is accepting registrations for members and non members for health and fitness classes.

Classes offered include: spinning (stationary cycling), aerobics, STEP aerobics, cardio mix, cardio sculpt, karate, yoga, Pilates, fit for life (a class designed for older active adults), prime time (a senior exercise class), bosu classes, absolutely abs, stretch and strengthening and aqua classes. Art auction at Hartwick

The Hartwick College women’s soccer team is playing host to an auction of fine are at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Theatre.

A preview will be held from 5-6 p.m. Admission is $10 per person or $15 per couple. Proceeds will benefit the women’s soccer team trip to Brazil.

Wolfe to drive for Hungry Drivers in 2005

Milford native Paul Wolfe has been named as the primary driver of the No. 6 Hungry Drivers Dodge for the 2005 NASCAR Busch Series season.

Wolfe will drive the car in a majority of the Busch companion events, allowing him to run for the Rookie of the Year title.

Wolfe posted two top-20 finishes this season in three starts on the NASCAR Busch Series, including a 12th place at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Tombs and Dello win races

Oneonta’s Gary Toombs and Mount Upton’s Gabby Dello each won two cross country races held in Wilber Park by Hurley’s Heroes Track Club of Oneonta.

Tombs, 47, finished in 14 minutes, 36 seconds on Oct. 30 over 2.5 miles and improved by nine seconds to win on Nov. 6 to win the men’s open division.

Dello, 16, won the female open division with times of 14:31 on Oct. 30 and 14:30 on Nov. 6

Ernie Davis Classic to be held Wednesday

The 15th Annual Ernie Davis Football Classic will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Union Endicott’s Ty-Cobb Stadium. Admission is $4.
