Cooperstown boys edge defending Class C state champion Tully, 48-45
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL
SECTION THREE CLASS C-1 SEMIFINAL
Staff Report
The Cooperstown boys went retro Friday.
The Redskins ousted defending Class C state champion Tully, 48-45, in a Section Three Class C-1 semifinal that brought back memories of the run to the state finals two years ago.
Dave Pikarsky scored 20 points to lead top-seeded Cooperstown in a wild one against the Knights, the 11th-ranked team in the state that featured three starters at 6-foot-4 or bigger.
"It’s crazy," said Redskins coach Dave Bertram, whose team advanced to the C-1 final Tuesday or Wednesday against th[an error occurred while processing this directive]e winner of Saturday’s game between Herkimer and Thousand Islands. "We never expected this. You always have that dream going into a season, and we’re living up to it.
"Everyone played their role tonight," he continued. "We tried to turn it into a running game, and we executed our game plan to a T."
The fourth quarter went back and forth, with three ties in the final three minutes.
Cooperstown’s Eddie Bauer hit a jumper with a minute left to put the Redskins up two, but Tully came back to tie it.
Then sophomore junior varsity call-up Luke Banner playing his sixth varsity game made a baseline jumper with 30 seconds left to make it 47-45 Cooperstown. Banner finished with 13 points.
The Knights then missed a shot and Bauer rebounded. He was fouled with eight seconds left, and he made 1 of 2 free throws to put the Redskins up, 48-45.
Tully came down and missed again with a wild shot, and Banner rebounded. The Knights fouled Banner with 2.3 seconds left, putting him at the free-throw line for a one-and-one. Banner missed the front end, and Tully’s Tim Henderson rebounded and put up a three-quarter court shot that hit the back of the rim.
"It was just like the Seton game (two years ago)," Bertram said of the overtime victory during a state playoff game. "They were so much bigger, but we somehow controlled the boards."
The Redskins fell behind, 18-11, after the first quarter but used their press to rally with a 16-0 run in the second quarter. Banner hit two three-pointers during the run.
"That totally changed the complexion of the game," Bertram said of the threes.
Bertram also said Cooperstown played a zone defense for the first time this season. The Redskins held Tully standout Dan Hardy a returning all-state player to four points, all in the first quarter. Chris Bush (seven points) spent most of the night matched up against Hardy, who came in averaging around 24 points.
The Redskins led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter before Tully rallied.
If Cooperstown wins the Class C-1 final, it would likely face top-ranked Faith Heritage in the sectional championship.
