Oneonta State Weekend Preview
Wrestling Oneonta State’s wrestling team will be at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships at Brockport on Saturday.
The tournament serves as a national qualifier. The 10 weight class winners will advance to nationals. Nine wild card spots are also on the line.
Senior Dustin Winn (Bainbridge-Guilford) is one of Oneonta’s top contenders. An automatic qualifier two years ago, Winn is ranked No. 5 in the country at 157 pounds and is 36-5. Senior Rory Tobias qualified for nationals last season at 149 pounds and is 25-7 this season.
Delhi grad Kyle Hauptfleisch (174 pounds, 30-10), Nick Castellano (197, 29-9) and Unatego grad John Leech (133, 25-12) are O-St[an error occurred while processing this directive]ate’s other top contenders.
Junior Kyle Hauptfleisch (Franklin) is 30-10 and will wrestle at 174. senior Nick Castellano at 197 and freshman John Leech (Unatego) are O-State’s other top contenders.
Scott Gorman (125), Bryan Coyle (141), Ryan Higgins (165), Ryan Lynch (184) and Josh Stewart (285) fill out O-State’s lineup.
Track and Field
The men’s and women’s track and field teams are at the SUNYAC championships this weekend at Hobart and William Smith.
O-State finished third in the women’s and fifth in the men’s last season. Geneseo won the women’s event last year and Cortland the men’s.
A trio of sprinters that includes senior Ashlee Robertson, junior Musu Jackson-Buckner and sophomore Maureen Verdier will lead the women on Saturday.
Robertson is the defending conference champion in both the 200 and 400. She has the fastest time in the 400 this season for both NCAA Division III and the SUNYAC. She has the second fastest time in the 200, behind Jackson-Buckner, and will be part of the 1,600 relay that has the fastest time entering the meet.
Jackson-Buckner is at the top of the 55-meter dash list for the conference with her NCAA provisional time of 7.31. At last year’s conference meet she ran for New Paltz and finished second in the 200 to Robertson when she was running for New Paltz. Freshman Mary Velan (Stamford) will compete in the 800.
The men enter with more depth. The sprinting core for this year includes senior Tom O’Neill and juniors Art and Andrae Dair. All three are in the top six entering the meet for times in all the sprints from 55 meters to 400.
In the jumps, senior Shaun Hurley, will lead Oneonta as the defending conference champion in both the high jump and triple jump. Entering the meet he has the best triple jump, which is also the 6th best jump in Div. III this season, at 14.32 meters.
Basketball
The men’s and women’s basketball teams play host to Potstam on Saturday.
The women (16-8, 10-5 SUNYAC) has clinched the fourth seed in the conference tournament and will play host to Fredonia or Geneseo on Tuesday.
Noreen Naughton has carried O-State recently and has four double-doubles in the past six games. She leads the team with 10.7 points and 7.6 rebounds.
O-State’s men (12-12, 8-7) secured a berth in the conference tournament with a victory over Oswego last weekend.
Junior Bill Heslin leads the Red Dragons with 14.7 points and 7.1 rebounds. Sophomore Kevin Reed (Downsville) is second in rebounding (5.9) and fourth in scoring (7ppg).
