Favorites advance in Class D

The higher seeds held court in Friday’s Section Four Class D girls basketball quarterfinals.
Downsville, South Kortright, Milford and Davenport all advanced in routs, putting the top four seeds into the semifinals.
The semifinals will likely be a double-header Tuesday at Delhi Tech. The times are not set.
Davenport 56, Schenevus 18
Courtney Adam had 20 points and six assists as fourth-seeded Davenport rolled into the semifinals with a victory over 12th-seeded Schenevus.
Brittany Westcott finished with 13 points, and Kaci Hood added eight points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats (17-5).
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Davenport led, 32-4, at halftime, using its press to baffle the Dragons (9-10).
"They seemed to have problems against the press," Davenport coach Ray Preston said. "But we also played decent halfcourt defense."
In the second quarter, the Wildcats outscored Schenevus, 20-2. Adam scored 11 points and the team hit three three-pointers.
"We started moving the ball and we got some steals," Preston said.
Alicia Klein had 18 points to lead Schenevus, which shot 13 percent in the game.
Angela Cobb contributed six points and seven rebounds for Davenport, which advanced to play top-seeded Downsville on Tuesday. The Eagles beat the Wildcats twice this season, including 48-41 in the Delaware League crossover game.

Downsville 65, CV-S 37
Courtney Hoyt had 18 points, 10 steals and five assists to lead top-seeded Downsville to a victory over visiting Cherry Valley-Springfield.
Linnea Mattson contributed 17 points and eight rebounds, and Alexa Henderson scored 13 points for the Eagles.
Downsville built a 17-1 lead less than three minutes in and was up, 26-7, at the end of the first quarter.
"We just came out strong and the press was working really well," Downsville coach Christine Baldauf said. "We got some good turnovers and fast-break layups right in the beginning."
Maddie Godman had nine points for eighth-seeded CV-S.
Downsville (20-2) plays fourth-seeded Davenport in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Jessica Laing scored 15 of second-seeded South Kortright’s 26 first-quarter points to lead the Rams over seventh-seeded Hunter-Tannersville.
Kassie Tiller contributed 20 points and six steals for the Rams.
"It was a great game," South Kortright coach Harry Nissen said. "The girls have some set goals and this was the first step."
Justyna Stachowiak led the Wildcats with 18 points.
South Kortright (18-3) plays Milford in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Milford 33, G-MU 16
Shannon Weir finished with 13 points, 14 rebounds and five assists to lead Milford over Gilbertsville-Mount Upton in a sectional quarterfinal.
After scoring 17 points in the first three quarters against G-MU’s zone defense, Milford looked inside more in the fourth quarter and got some easy baskets, Milford coach Jim Weir said.
"There was a lid on the basket tonight," said Jim Weir. "For most of the game we weren’t getting it, but in the fourth quarter we calmed down and executed our offense and got some inside looks and got them to fall."
Christine Hill led G-MU with five points, but went 1-for-8 from the line. The Raiders shot 2-for-12 as a team on free throws.
The game was a rematch of the Tri-Valley League championship, which the Wildcats won, 40-25.
Liza Hendricks added six points and 11 rebounds for Milford (19-3), which plays South Kortright in Tuesday’s semifinals.
