Tobias wins wrestling title

ONEONTA STATE WRESTLING

Senior Rory Tobias was one of three Oneonta State wrestlers who advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament, winning a championship at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Tobias the 149-pound weight class to earn an automatic NCAA berth. Tobias, who entered the competition as the third seed, upset the No. 2 seed from Brockport, 15-0, in his opening match. He went on to beat top-seeded and nationally ranked Jad Duca of Ithaca, 3-2, overtime.

Tobias is making his second straight trip to the NCAA tournament, which runs Marcj 4-5 at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. He was one of eight wild cards from the conference last season.

The Red Dragons, who finished fifth with 42 points, finished with a total of five place-winners. Oneonta’s two wild-card se[an error occurred while processing this directive]lections by the coaches are seniors Dustin Winn (Bainbridge) and Nick Castellano. Both finished as runners-up, at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Winn, the No. 2 seed, won his first match by a technical fall, 15-0, before defeating third-seeded Shaheim Bradshaw of Brockport, 6-4, in overtime. He fell to top-seeded Kaci Beach of Ithaca, 3-1. Winn is making his second trip to the NCAA tournament, winning an automatic qualifier at 149 pounds two years ago.

Castellano, seeded third, won his first match, 5-2, over second-seeded Nick Caladrino of Ithaca. He fell in the final, 7-3, to nationally ranked Willie Weiss of Brockport.

The Red Dragons other placewinners were Kyle Hauptfleisch (Delhi) and Josh Stewart.
