O-State’s LoPiccolo named track coach of year

The SUNY Athletic Conference named Oneonta State indoor track coach Matt LoPiccolo its men’s Coach of the Year Tuesday.

LoPiccolo, in his fifth year at Oneonta, led the Red Dragons’ men to a third-place finish in the SUNYAC Championships last weekend, up two spots from 2004.

Oneonta won three individual titles and the 1,600-meter relay.

Dave Prevosti of Geneseo earned the SUNYAC’s Women’s Coach of the Year.

Coach of the Year winners are selected by SUNYAC coaches.

Unatego graduate Dan Fairbairn will wrestle for Morrisville State College at the 2005 National Junior College Athletic Association Championships this weekend in Rochester, Minn.

Fairbairn is one of seven Morrisville wrestlers to advance to the national tournament. He’ll wrestle at 174 pounds.

Morrisville finished the season 7-0 in dual matches and placed second at the 2005 NJCAA Region III Northeast District Championships last week.

Locals to compete at ESGs

Four area residents have qualified to compete in ski-orienteering during the Empire State Games in Lake Placid this weekend.

Gary Brackett of Oneonta and former Oneonta resident Martin Engstrom-Heg will compete in the men’s open division.

Megan Donnelly-Heg of Cooperstown will compete in the women’s open, and Oneonta resident Verna Engstrom-Heg will ski in the women’s veterans’ masters.

Soccer and Swim Festival has openings

Openings still exist for the Powerade Indoor Soccer and Swim Festival, which starts Friday at Oneonta State.

The event runs from 5-9 p.m. Friday for students in grades 1-5, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for students in grades 3-6.

Catskill Little League registration Saturday

Catskill Mountain Little League will hold registration for new players from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

Catskill Mountain basketball tryouts set

Catskill Mountain will hold tryouts for its AAU girls basketball travel teams beginning Sunday. Teams will participate in approximately six weekend tournaments throughout New York and the Northeast from April to June. Girls in grades 6-12 are eligible to compete.

Tryouts for players ages 11-12 will be held at Unatego Central from 1-2:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by tryouts for ages 13-14 from 3-4:30 p.m. Registration begins a half-hour before tryouts. Tryouts for ages 11-14 run from 12:30-2:30 p.m. March 6, followed by ages 15-17 from 3-5 p.m.

A final tryout for ages to be announced is scheduled for March 13 at Oneonta High.

There is a non-refundable tryout fee of $25, which covers AAU registration and expenses. Cost is $10 for those registered with AAU, but athletes must bring registration numbers to the tryouts.

Player participation fee for the 2005 season is $250, which must be paid upon a player’s selection on the second day of tryouts, unless alternative arrangements are made with the club.

Super sweepers accepting entries

Entries are being accepted for the Walton Country Store Open, slated for 2 p.m. March 5 at Walton Lanes, and the Gus Lampo Super Sweeper, scheduled for 2 p.m. March 13 at the Bowler’s Club in Latham.

There is a $30 entry fee for the Walton Country Store Open, which has a limited field (first 40 paid entries) and a first-place guaranteed prize of $300.

Entry for the sweeper in Latham is $50 with an estimated first-place prize of $1,000.

Entry blanks are available at most of bowling centers throughout upstate New York.

Swimming lessons March 23 at Delhi Tech

Delhi Tech will offer spring swimming lessons beginning March 23. Six- and 12-lesson schedules are available for $30 and $45, respectively.

Delhi also will offer lifeguard-training classes, which begin March 21. Cost is $195, with a $35 non-refundable deposit due at registration.

Handgun seminar set for April 30

Women on Target from the Women of the National Rifle Association will play host to a handgun training seminar at the Oneonta Sportsman Club from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.. April 30. All participants must have a valid New York State Pistol Permit.

The seminar will introduce the handgun shooting sport and will consist of four hours of classroom lecture with two to three hours of range shooting to follow.

Afton softball to hold clinic Friday, Saturday

The Afton softball team will play host to a two-day youth clinic at Afton Central on Friday and Saturday.

Fordham University coach Bridget Baxter, the 2003 Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year, will run the clinic. Fundamentals, mechanics, hitting and fielding will be stressed.

Cost is $60 for both days, $20 for Friday’s pitching session or $50 for Saturday’s hitting and fielding session. Participants will be grouped by age and ability.

Baseball camp at O-State on Saturday, Sunday

Oneonta State will play host to a baseball camp for players ages 13 to high school senior at its Alumni Field House from 6:30-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Participants should arrive a half-hour before each session and can choose to train at one or more of six stations (pitchers, catchers, base running, bunting, defense, hitting).

Athletes should bring shorts, socks, sneakers, a towel and a glove, and are encouraged to bring their own bats.

Boys basketball tryouts set for Sunday, Monday

The Oneonta Boys and Girls Club on River Street will hold tryouts for its boys AAU basketball teams from 2-4 p.m. Sunday and from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday.

Boys will compete in two divisions this year, ages 15-and-under and 17-and-under. Athletes are expected to attend both sessions for their respective age-group. Players and at least one parent/guardian should attend at informational meeting Sunday before tryouts begin.

Soccer official meetings to be held in March

The Oneonta Soccer Referees Association will offer an entry-level referee class for individuals interested in officiating USSF sanctioned youth and adult games.

Indoor soccer tournament set for March 5

Walton High, Mack Middle School and Townsend Grade School will play host to the sixth annual Walton Booster Club Stop-DWI indoor soccer tournament at 9 a.m. March 5.

The event is open to the pubic at no cost.

A total of 54 teams are expected to compete in the tournament, which has limited space. Spots are still available for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade teams.

The Empire State Wizards have scheduled tryouts for their AAU basketball team for 10 a.m. March 5-6 at Union College in Schenecady.

Schenevus Soccer Club to hold events

The Schenevus Soccer Club will play host to futsol tournaments for the first time when boys and girls varsity teams meet March 19. Boys and girls modified teams play March 20. All tournaments are separated by gender.

Cost is $80 per team and rosters should include six to 10 players. Deadline to register is March 11. Schedules will be sent no later than March 16.

Duke Invitational starts March 29 at OBGC

The seventh annual Duke Invitational Basketball Tournament runs March 29 through April 2 at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club on River Street.

Boys and girls will compete in separate tournaments at ages 12-and-under, 13-15 and 16-18. Team donation is $100 with a maximum roster size of 10 players. Rosters and donations are due March 18. No late registrations will be accepted.

The tournament helps raise money for the Boston Hospital Children’s Heart Foundation, in memory of Vincent Duke Johnsson.

Women’s bowling tournaments start in April

The 69th annual New York State Women’s Bowling Association Championship Tournament runs from April 15 to May 22 at the 66-lane AMF Airport Bowling Center in Cheektowaga.

The tournament features multiple team events and scratch or handicap doubles and singles play, based on entered averages. Entries must be received by Feb. 15.

Entries for the 24th annual Queens Tournament at Transit Lanes in Williamsville (April 16) are due by March 16.

Falconry exam slated for April 29

Applications for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Falconry Apprentice License Exam will be accepted until April 8. The free, written exam is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon April 29 at various locations in New York.

The cost of a two-year falconry license is $20. To qualify for the DEC Apprentice Falconry License, applicants must be at least 14 years of age, possess a valid New York small-game hunting license and maintain DEC-approved facilities for housing the raptors.

Apprentices are limited to possessing one bird, either an American kestrel falcon (also known as a "sparrow hawk") or a red-tailed hawk.

After two years as an apprentice, a falconer may qualify for a general license. Master falconers must have a minimum of seven years experience.

Chenango Soccer Club sets schedule

The Chenango Chargers Soccer Club has announced its 2005 tournament schedule.

The schedule features six weekends of tournament play at the David L. Emerson Soccer Farm in Oxford, located six miles south of Norwich on state Route 12.

Each weekend bracket features single age-groups for boys and girls. Three weekends will be scheduled for club-level teams and three for premier teams.

May 7-8: U-16 and U-17 boys and girls premier.

May 21-22: U-11, U-12 and U-13 boys and girls club.

June 11-12: U-14 and U-15 boys and girls club.

June 18-19: U-14 and U-15 boys and girls premier.

July 2-3: U-17 boys and girls club.
