Hill, VanBuren advance

Cooperstown senior Brendan Hill continued his undefeated wrestling season Friday with a first-period pin of Oneida’s Sean Traynor in the Section Three Wrestling Tournament at Oswego.
Hill (34-0) received a first-round bye at 215 pounds, then pinned Traynor to advance to the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday. Hill next meets Mohawk’s Ed Backus (29-8), with the winner advancing to the sectional championships, slated to start at 5 p.m. Saturday. The loser competes for places 3-6 in wrestlebacks, which start after semifinals are completed.
Hill won a sectional title last year before falling in the state championship, one of his two losses last winter.
Ted VanBuren, also a senior at Cooperstown, won his only match at 171 pounds Friday to advance to the semifinals. He followed a fi[an error occurred while processing this directive]rst-round bye with a 7-4 decision over LaFayette’s Pat Dwyer. VanBuren (33-2) wrestles General Brown’s Anthony Tundo (30-10) in the semis.
Josh White of the Redskins fell in his opener at 125 pounds, dropping a 12-7 decision to Will Wheelock of Adirondack. White finished the season 18-15.
Sectional winners advance to the state championships, scheduled for March 4-5 at the Pepsi Arena in Albany.
