Hartwick men’s lacrosse drops opener, 8-6

Women’s basketball falls in Empire 8 semis
Sophomore Pat McCormack had three goals and an assist, but the Hartwick College men’s lacrosse team lost its opener, 8-6, to 12th-ranked St. Lawrence on Sunday.
Nick Mastine and Brendan Lynch each scored twice for the Saints (1-0).
The Hawks trailed, 7-4, with 12 minutes, 8 seconds left but rallied with two goals. Sophomore Brian Miller and senior Noah Hollander scored to make it 7-6 with 6:47 left.
Although both teams had numerous scoring opportunities in the final five minutes of regulation, Mastine scored unassisted with 4:53 remaining to secure the victory.

Women’s Basketball
Ithaca 79, Hartwick 60
The Empire 8 Conference Tournament belonged to Stephanie Cleary.
Ithaca’s senior guard scored 25 points in the top-seeded Bombers victory over the Hawks in Saturday’s semifinals.
She then went off for a collegiate-high 36 points in a 73-62 victory over St. John Fisher in Sunday’s championship.
Against Hartwick, Cleary hit 8 of 14 from the field, including 3 of 5 from three-point range. She also had 10 of Ithaca’s 35 steals.
Sophomore forward Jenny Knight led the Hawks (12-14) with 19 points and 11 rebounds, giving her a fifth straight double-double. Junior guard Shelly Miles (Gilbertsville-Mount Upton) added 16 points.
Hartwick fell behind, 43-28, at halftime. The Hawks committed 40 turnovers.

Swimming
State meet
The Hartwick men finished third out of 13 teams at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships in Syracuse. The three-day state meet was held at Nottingham High School.
The Hawks (1,090 points) were behind first-place Union (1,115) and second-place Alfred (1,100.50).
Hartwick won state titles in 400 medley relay and the 200 medley relay.
The 400 medley team of sophomore Kurt Cedo, senior co-captain Adam Torrey (Oneonta), junior Dan Holmberg and senior Gladstone Edwards placed first in 3 minutes, 30.76 seconds.
The 200 medley team of junior Ben Murphy, Torrey, Holmberg and Edwards took first in 1:35.88.
In diving, junior Mark Phillips placed third (422.65 points) in 3-meter and fourth in 1-meter (380.20).
In individual events, Cedo finished third in the 200 backstroke (1:55.38) and the 100 backstroke (53.72).
Holmberg took third in the 100 freestyle (46.59) and contributed fourth-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (51.49) and the 50 freestyle (21.48).
Torrey placed second in the 100 breaststroke (58.58), fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:11.56) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (1:59.61).
Aikins finished third in the 400 individual medley (4:13.15) and the 200 butterfly (1:56.37).

NYSCTC Championships
The Hartwick women finished in 11th place (12 points) out of 16 teams at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Championships at Rochester Institute of Technology.
The men were last in the 15-team field with 0 points.
For the women, senior thrower Renata Williams placed third in the shot put (40 feet, seven inches) and took sixth in the 20-pound weight throw (44-8½).
Senior Maria Fernandez finished seventh in the 55-meter hurdles (9.16 seconds) and placed eighth in the 200 (27.98).
In relay competition, the women’s distance medley team of freshman Katie Van Vorst, sophomore Cailin Sanford, Fernandez and Greene finished 12th (13:46.97).
Freshman Luke Sattler led the men’s team with a 22nd-place finish in the 1,500 meters (4:29.03).
The men’s distance medley relay team of freshman Enver Sibilia, sophomore Ned Slagle, freshman Geoff McDonald and freshman David Rotkowitz placed 11th (11.06.74).
