All-state error puts Dorsey in Class C with Pikarsky

Daily Star First-Team All-Stars Dorsey and Dave Pikarsky of Cooperstown earned all-state boys basketball honors in Class C, the New York State Sports Writers’ Association announced Wednesday.

There’s only one problem: Dorsey didn’t play for a Class C team this past winter.

"He would have made a Class B team, anyway," NYSSWA newsletter editor/publisher Neil Kerr said of senior forward Do[an error occurred while processing this directive]rsey, who helped Class B Sidney to its third straight Midstate Athletic Conference championship during the 2004-05 season. "Somebody else would have been bumped."

Although Kerr said the error was unintentional, Dorsey’s misplacement means one Class B player received all-state honors who shouldn’t have, and one player was left off the Class C all-state list.

"It just happens sometimes," said Kerr, who attributed the mistake to an oversight in enrollment numbers. Sidney’s jump from Class C to B in 2003 likely added to the confusion.

Eight all-state teams of five players each were picked in Class C, with 6-foot-5 Dorsey making the seventh team and 5-11 senior guard Pikarsky on the eighth. Kerr said Dorsey should have been placed on the seventh or eighth team in Class B.

Dorsey averaged 18.6 points and 10.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 blocks for Sidney (19-5), which fell to Chenango Forks, 57-46, in the Section Four Class B semifinals.

Pikarsky led the Redskins with 19.3 points per game, the fourth-best scoring average among area players. Pikarsky, who also averaged 3.6 steals, helped Cooperstown to a 10-0 record atop Division II of the Center State Conference and an appearance in the Section Three Class C championship. Cooperstown’s 20-4 season ended there with a 58-29 loss to Faith Heritage.

The NYSSWA did not give all-state honors to the area’s top three scorers. Gilboa senior Zak Hill led the area with 24.5 points per game, followed by South Kortright senior Jon Kenchen (22.1) and Downsville senior Shane Bussiere (21.7). None were selected in Class D, which had a total of six teams.

Oneonta High senior Chris Garcia, The Daily Star Player of the Year, did not make any of the eight teams in Class A. Garcia, a 5-11 guard, averaged 17.9 points and 5.9 assists en route to his second straight Daily Star First-Team honor.

The NYSSWA selects all-state teams for several sports each season and is best known for producing weekly rankings of high school sports teams.
