Winans’s homer leads Afton past Laurens

OHS softball, baseball lose at Sus Valley

Staff Report

Derek Winans led off the top of the ninth inning with a home run to give Afton an 11-10 non-league baseball victory over host Laurens on Wednesday.

Laurens had Dan Bailey on second base with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t get the tying run in. Corey Carr followed Bailey with a line drive to the shortstop, and Bailey was doubled off second. Justin Arnold then struck out Greg Breuer to end the game.

Laurens committed 10 errors, and pitchers Tom Dorritie, Bailey and Breuer combined for six walks.

"Walks and errors killed us," Laurens coach Andy Carr said. "We had our opportunities to win the game. We just di[an error occurred while processing this directive]dn’t capitalize on them."

Bailey went 3-for-5 for the Leopards (4-2, 2-1), who play host to Walton in a double-header at 10 a.m. Friday.

Kyle Donnelly hit a two-run homer in the third inning, but visiting Oneonta committed nine errors en route to a Southern Tier Athletic Conference loss.

"This league is too good to commit nine errors and have a chance to win a ballgame," Oneonta coach Joe Hughes said. "Our mistakes went beyond those nine physical errors. We misjudged flyballs and had lots of throwing problems, too."

Jeff Urda had four hits, including a double, and scored three runs for SV, which scored in every inning.

"There was just too much hitting from them and numerous mistakes," Hughes said. "It’s a simple game of pitch and catch and we have to make some drastic changes if we want to win."

Oneonta (1-6, 0-5) plays host to Whitney Point on Friday.

SV 9, Oneonta 0

Becca Wiggins had 13 strikeouts in a one-hitter to lead host Susquehanna Valley to a Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory.

Hannah Kirkpatrick had Oneonta’s hit in the third inning with a slap-bunt.

Renae Alvarez suffered the loss in her second game back since being out with bronchitis.

"They had two solid hits and we’re talking one of the top teams," Oneonta coach George Moussa said. "Renae pitched a hell of a game. A couple miscues gave them a couple more runs than they should have had. All in all, we took some positives out of this.

"If we play this a week ago, it would have been in the 20s," he continued. "Today, they battled for seven innings and a lot of confidence builds. Having Renae back, I can’t emphasize how big that is for us. We just need for her to get strong again. Hopefully this is where we turn it around."

The Yellowjackets (1-6, 0-5) play host to Whitney Point on Friday.

Lacey Stanton hit a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the sixth to lead host Deposit in the Midstate Athletic Conference and give coach Gary Pratt his 350th victory.

"This was definitely a milestone," Pratt said. "To be able to come from behind and beat a very good team made it even more exciting."

Ashley Rutherford followed Stanton with a groundout to the right side, allowing Stanton to score the winner.

Deposit (4-2) is at Sidney on Tuesday.
