Men’s Tennis

Empire 8 Championships

Seniors Vladimir Vecher and Julien Klein each went 3-0, but Hartwick finished sixth with a 1-2 record at the Empire 8 Championships in Rochester on Sunday.

The fifth-seeded Hawks (5-10) opened with a 5-2 loss to fourth-seeded Alfred on Saturday. They followed with a 7-0 victory over No. 8 Utica before losing, 5-2, to St. John Fisher in the fifth-place match Sunday.

Vecher, the 2004 Empire 8 Player of the Year, won all three of his first singles matches in straight sets, as did Klein at second singles. The two teamed up for a 3-0 first doubles record as well.

Hartwick plays host to Elmira at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Men’s Lacrosse

Hartwick 12, RIT 8

Junior Mike Debrossy had four goals and an assist to lead host Hartwick to an Empire 8 Conference victory Saturday.

The Hawks (9-5, 5-2) clinched the second seed in the conference tournament with the victory. Third-seeded RIT (7-6, 5-2) returns to Hartwick at 4 p.m. Friday for an Empire 8 semifinal.

Top-seeded Ithaca (9-4, 7-0) plays the winner of Tuesday’s Nazareth-Elmira game.

RIT led, 2-0, with 8 minutes, 29 seconds to play in the first quarter, but the Hawks followed with an 11-2 run.

The Tigers scored four goals in the final 10 minutes, but Hartwick goalie Jason Fautas made three late saves to help Hartwick retain the lead. Fautas finished with 10 saves.

Pat McCormack had three goals and Noah Hollander a game-high four assists to lead Hartwick. Brian Prescott contributed two goals and an assist.

Women’s Lacrosse

Brockport 17, Hartwick 15

Brockport erased a 7-6 halftime deficit en route to a non-conference victory over visiting Hartwick on Saturday.

Jenev Schilling, Jamie Boulton and Kelsey Campbell each had two goals to help the Hawks to the halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 5-0 run, but Hartwick answered back with a 5-0 run for a 12-11 lead with 10:19 left. Brockport took the lead for good by scoring five of the next seven goals.

Hartwick’s Tiffany Hoke scored with 54 seconds left to make it 16-15, but the last goal came from Brockport’s Renee Cuda with 23 seconds left.

Schilling led Hartwick (4-9) with four goals. Hoke finished with three goals, and Campbell and Caitlin Damberg-Mauser had two goals apiece.

The Hawks play host to Rensselaer at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
