O-State split not enough

Baseball team loses title; softball sweeps

ONEONTA STATE SPORTS

Staff Report

Oneonta State dropped a winner-take-all baseball game Tuesday as host Cortland won the second game of a SUNY Athletic Conference double-header, 14-2, to clinch its ninth consecutive regular-season league title.

Sixth-ranked Cortland, which fell, 4-2, in 10 innings in the opener, will play host to the four-team SUNYAC Tournament from May 6-8 by virtue of its 13-1 conference record. Oneonta, ranked 15th among NCAA Division III teams, will be the No. 2 seed with a 12-2 SUNYAC mark.

RBI doubles by Jamie Wright and Brandon Galutz put O-State ahead, 4-2, in the 10th inning of the opener. Reliever Chris Bellinger ea[an error occurred while processing this directive]rned his first save with a scoreless 10th, as Oneonta (26-7-1) gave Cortland (28-5-1) its first SUNYAC loss of the season.

First-game starter Chris Salamida, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI, did not play in the second game after he was ejected in the eighth inning. Don Lawrence, who relieved Salamida in the seventh, got the pitching triumph and improved to 3-1 this spring.

Senior Matt Miller (6-0) tied a Cortland record for all-time victories by earning his 24th in the second-game triumph. He struck out seven, walked four and allowed five hits and two runs in six innings. Greg Sulz had two hits to pace Oneonta in the second game.
