| oklyn erased an early four-run deficit with a six-run sixth inning to rally for an 11-8 New York-Penn League victory in front of 2,686 fans at Damaschke Field on Wednesday.
Brooklyn had a six-run inning for the second straight night as the Cyclones opened Tuesday’s 12-9 triumph with six in the first.
"Hopefully this can carry over for us," Brooklyn manager Mookie Wilson said. "We’ve been struggling a li[an error occurred while processing this directive]ttle bit."
Oneonta (18-8), which lost its second straight despite outhitting Brooklyn, 15-13, finishes its three-game series with the Cyclones at 7 tonight. Matt O’Brien is scheduled to start for the Tigers.
"This is kind of like last night," said Oneonta manager Tom Brookens. "We can’t hold them down, plain and simple. They’ve played two nice ballgames. They’ve played errorless baseball and we haven’t and that’s the difference. Both teams are giving the runs up."
After the Tigers jumped to a 7-3 lead entering the sixth, reliever Collin Mahoney couldn’t get an out.
Caleb Stewart greeted Mahoney with a double on the first pitch. Josh Petersen then pushed the count to 2-1 before being hit with a off-speed breaking ball to put runners at first and second.
Nick Evans followed with a high flyball to center field, but Justin Justice lost it. Shortstop Michael Hollimon ran into the outfield and pointed, but the ball dropped in for a single, loading the bases.
Mahoney then threw a wild pitch, allowing Stewart to score and Petersen and Evans to each advance a base. That was one of six wild pitches for Oneonta, with three to follow in the eighth.
Rafael Arroyo loaded the bases again with a four-pitch walk, and on a 2-2 count to Jonel Pacheco, Mahoney threw his second wild pitch, this time inside and over the reaching glove of catcher Joel Roa. Petersen scored to make it 7-5 as Evans and Arroyo advanced a base.
Pacheco then hit a hard single to left, scoring Evans to make it 7-6. That ended Mahoney’s night as Jeff Hahn came in and got Armand Gaerlan to fly out.
Pinch-hitter Jonathan Malo followed with a bloop single that landed just inside the left-field line to bring in Arroyo and tie the score. Malo went to second on the throw home, drawing the infield in with runners at second and third.
Joe Holden lined out to Michael Hollimon at short for the second out, but Kyle Brown hit a bouncer to the left of third baseman Cory Middleton, who couldn’t hold onto the ball. Middleton bobbled it, too, allowing Brown to reach safely and Pacheco to score.
Stewart drove in Malo with a single to left for a 9-7 Brooklyn lead.
"We’re not the best offensive club in the league, but we use what we can," Wilson said. "We’re aggressive and they are smart running the bases."
The inning also erased a solid outing by Oneonta starter Guillermo Moscoso, who allowed three runs, five hits and one walk, and struck out three in five innings.
"(Moscoso) gave up two runs in the first and then settled down for us," Brookens said. "Mahoney struggled. That’s where we allowed them to get back in the ball game."
Brooklyn scored its last two in the eighth with the help of three wild pitches. Each allowed a Brooklyn runner to move from first to third as Roa chased the ball to the deep Damaschke backstop.
"I haven’t seen that all year," Brookens said. "You have to block those balls. They have to be blocked at the plate."
Trailing, 11-8, in the eighth, Oneonta loaded the bases with one out. However, Eric Domangue struck out Middleton and got Justin Justice to ground out to end the inning.
"We were one big hit away from getting back in it," Brookens said. "We got 15 hits and we needed one more there and it didn’t happen."
The Tigers fell behind, 3-0, after two innings, but scored four in the third, all with two out.
Hollimon and Matt Joyce each had run-scoring singles, and Justice had a two-run single. Brandon Timm had an RBI-single in the fourth, and Ryan Roberson and Jorge Patino each plated runs with singles in the fifth to help the Tigers to a 7-3 lead.
Hollimon, who finished 2-for-4, added a homer in the sixth, his team-leading fifth of the season.
Joyce had three hits for Oneonta, which got two apiece from William Rhymes, Timm and Patino.
