Tigers slip in extras
Swept for first time this year as Cyclones win, 10-9, in 11 innings

ONEONTA Brooklyn’s Caleb Stewart had a field day with Oneonta pitchers Thursday.
Stewart hit a third-inning grand slam and an RBI triple in the top of the 11th to lead the Cyclones to a 10-9 victory and a three-game sweep of the O-Tigers in front of 624 fans at Damaschke Field.
Stewart’s triple capped a 3-for-6 night that included five RBIs. He fell a single shy of hitting for the cycle.
"You’re going to run into these days once in a while where you see the ball pretty good," Stewart said. [an error occurred while processing this directive]quot;I just saw some good pitches to hit."
Stewart’s triple came two innings after Oneonta scored five times in the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
"These guys are battling their tails off," said Oneonta manager Tom Brookens, whose team was swept for the first time this season. "It was a heck of a comeback. Scoring five in the ninth shows the character of this team. We’ve had three great games and come up empty, but that’s baseball."
Oneonta (18-9) remained in first place in the New York-Penn League’s Stedler Division. The Tigers play host to the Williamsport Crosscutters (18-12) at 7 tonight to begin a three-game set.
Brooklyn’s Joe Holden led off the 11th with a bloop single to left field off losing pitcher Jose Fragoso (4-1). Kyle Brown popped up a bunt attempt to Fragoso for the first out, bringing up Stewart.
Facing a full-count, Stewart lined a shot into the right-center gap for a standup triple as Holden scored the go-ahead run.
"(Fragoso) kept challenging me," Stewart said. "He went away, away, away, but then he missed with one and left it over the plate."
Travis Hope, who blew a save chance in the ninth, put the Tigers down in order in the 11th. Jorge Patino and William Rhymes each grounded out to Hope, and Brandon Timm struck out swinging to end the game.
It was an anti-climactic ending for the O-Tigers, who rallied from a 9-4 deficit against Brooklyn reliever Kevin Tomasiewicz in the ninth.
After Michael Hollimon led off with a strike out, Matt Joyce, Cory Middleton and Justin Justice walked to load the bases. Ryan Roberson singled up the middle, scoring Joyce and Middleton and prompting Brooklyn manager Mookie Wilson to call for Hope with a 9-6 lead.
Brookens sent Mark Haske in to pinch hit for Schuyler Williamson. On a 1-1 count, Haske pulled a fastball from Hope over the left-field fence, tying the score at 9.
"He gave me a good pitch to hit," said Haske, who hit his first professional homer. "I saw a pitch I liked and gave it a good swing and helping us get back into the game."
Said Brookens: "I’m sure he’ll remember that the rest of his career. Just to step in there and hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer is quite a feat."
Brooklyn trailed, 1-0, entering the third. With two out, Drew Butera and Holden had singles, and Brown walked to load the bases against Oneonta starter Matt O’Brien.
Stewart hit the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for a 4-1 lead.
"I was sitting in the on-deck circle, just hoping Brown would give me a chance with the bases loaded," Stewart said. "In my first at-bat, I saw the guy well. He gave me a first-pitch fastball and I just jumped all over it."
After falling behind, 8-2, Oneonta scored two in the seventh. Hollimon had an RBI single and Joyce had a sacrifice fly.
The Cyclones added one in the ninth on an run-scoring double from Nick Evans.
