O-State alums shine at ESGs

It’s going to be tough for Oneonta State track coach Matt LoPiccolo to match two of his former runners at the Empire State Games.

O-State grad Tom O’Neill won the open 200 meters in 22.21 seconds for the Central squad Friday in Poughkeepsie. He also finished third in the 100 semifinals (11.51 seconds) and will go for a medal in that event at 10:35 a.m. Saturday.

Fellow graduate Ashlee Robertson earned a silver medal in the open 200 finals (25.78). New York City’s Jessica Clark, who had the top heat time Thursday, won in 25.25. Robertson ran a 25.70 in the semifinals, and Clark had a 24.56.

Robertson won her heat in the open 100 semifinals (12.92). The final is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Softball

Afton graduate and Mansfield senior Kris Kelly went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Central’s 2-1 defeat of Hudson Valley at Marist College. Kelly also made an error at third base.

Earlier in the day, she went 0-for-3 in a 3-0 victory over Western.

Central is 3-1 in round-robin play and takes on New York City at 10 a.m. Saturday. The medal games begin Saturday afternoon.

Cycling

Franklin resident Michelle Costello took sixth place in the 44-mile road race in Tymor Park. She finished in 2:21:49, 1:17 behind the three medalists, who were all from the Adirondack squad. Costello earned a silver medal in Thursday’s 10-mile time trial.

She still has two races left, including a 20-mile criterium at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Nick Suozzo (Franklin) finished 20th in the 72-mile road race. His time of 3:17:43 trailed winner Fernando Ferreira of Hudson Valley by 1:10. Suozzo will compete in the 31-mile criterium at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Women’s Basketball

Hartwick College’s Lindsay Wilson and Worcester graduate Erica VanWormer did not score in Central’s 65-55 victory over Adirondack in an open game at Vassar College. Central plays Hudson Valley at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Volleyball

West Winfield resident Kevin Lynk and the Central scholastic men’s squad split two games at Vassar Field Hoise. It lost to Long Island, 27-27, 22-25, 15-13, before defeating New York City, 21-25, 25-23, 15-9.

Wrestling

South Edmeston resident Scott Fuller lost in the bronze-medal match of the 165-pound scholastic Greco-Roman division. Long Island’s Jeff Piccolo pinned Fuller in 3:34.

Bainbridge’s Justin Davy lost both his matches in the 132-pound scholastic freestyle preliminaries. He dropped a 3-2 decision to Western’s Mike Bunn and then was pinned in 52 seconds by Hudson Valley’s Lou Rugginello.

Masters Athletics

Cooperstown’s Doug Geertgens cleaned up Friday in the 60-64 age division. He won gold in the 300 hurdles (50.02 seconds) and took second in the long jump (4.23 meters). He won bronzes in the 100 (13.93) and high jump (1.35 meters).

Cobleskill resident George Freeman won the 70-74 steeplechase (11:03.4) and 300 hurdles (1:10.93).

Oneonta resident Dillon Maier won the 70-74 pentathlon with 626 points.

Masters Cycling

Cooperstown resident Angus MacKie took sixth in the 55-64 road race in 1:31:52. Cobleskill’s Jud Speer placed 12th in the 35-44 road race in 2:16:27.
