Newcomer homers as O-Tigers beat Vermont, 8-2

O-TIGERS ’05

Staff Report

Jeff Larish provided the fireworks for his first night with the Oneonta Tigers.

Larish finished 2-for-4, including his first professional homer, to lead the O-Tigers to an 8-2 victory over host Vermont on Thursday.

Larish, selected in the fifth round of the 2005 draft, was called up to Oneonta from the Gulf Coast League Tigers on Thursday.

First baseman Larish, who hit .324 with 23 homers and 67 RBIs for Arizona State this season, recently signed with Detroit for a $220,000 signing bonus, according to Baseball America.

In six games with the GCL Tigers, Larish hit .222 (4-for-18), including a double, a run and four RBIs. He homered in his second at[an error occurred while processing this directive]-bat Thursday, helping the Tigers (33-22) to remain a half-game ahead of Lowell in the Stedler Division. Lowell (33-23) beat Tri-City, 8-3, on Thursday.

Oneonta trailed, 2-1, entering the seventh. Larish walked, took second on a passed ball, moved to third on a groundout and came home on a wild pitch to tie the score.

The O-Tigers took the lead for good in the eighth. Matt Joyce doubled, Justin Justice walked and Cory Middleton reached on a error by shortstop Jose Contreras to load the bases.

Michael Hollimon followed by grounding into a double play, but Joyce scored for a 3-2 lead.

Oneonta scored five runs in the ninth, capped by a three-run triple from Hollimon.

Jake Baxter (2-2) earned the victory for the O-Tigers, pitching five shutout innings of relief. The Tigers continue their four-game series at Vermont at 7:05 tonight.
