Local boy wins seven medals at canoe event

Gilbertsville resident Matt Rudnitsky won seven gold medals during the 2005 United States Canoe Association’s Canoe and Kayak National Championships, which ran Aug. 8-14 in Warren, Pa.
Among Rudnitsky’s victories was the junior/men’s 500-meter sprint. He teamed with his uncle Andy Rudnitsky to beat Rochester resident Marc Gillespie and John Edwards of Florida by less than one second.
Matt Rudnitsky also joined Shane MacDowell of Massachusetts to win the junior men’s division. Rudnitsky’s other first-place finishes came in two C-2 junior/men’s marathons with his uncle; the junior/men’s sprint (ages 15-17); the junior men’s biathlon; and the C-1 men’s junior sprint.

Miranda Robinson of Otego won the junior women’s sprint (15-17); the C-2 junior mixed with Zakk Havens of Michigan; the junior women’s marathon; and the C2 junior/women marathon with Alivia Moore of Maine. Robinson’s father, Rodney, also competed.
Herm Botzow of Gilbertsville won the C2 mixed marathon with teammate Colleen Moore of Maine.
Nathan Derr of Unadilla also competed, as did Otego resident Cathy Grimes, Otego’s Mike Packard, Delhi’s Bob Fisher and New Berlin’s Dana Henry.
