County golf championship set for weekend

AREA SPORTS BRIEFS

The 28th annual Otsego County Amateur Golf Championship will be held at the Oneonta Country Club and Leatherstocking Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The tournament features a stroke-play format, with 75 percent of entry fees returned to golfers in the form of gift certificates. The tournament champion will receive the Atchinson Cup.

YMCA volleyball sign-ups underway

The Oneonta Family YMCA is accepting sign-ups through Sept. 7 for the upcoming co-ed volleyball season.

Golf tournament set for Saturday

The First Presbyterian Church’s fifth annual Gilbertsville Invitational Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday at Cee-Jay Golf Course in Laurens.

Davenport boosters golf tournament Saturday

A golf tournament to benefit Davenport Central’s extra-curricular activities will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Ouleout Creek Golf Course in Franklin.

Section Four to hold rules meetings

Andes golf tournament set for Sunday

The 24th annual Iva Terry Andes Invitational Golf Tournament opens with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Delhi College Golf Course.

The four-person, captain-and-crew tournament is open to anyone who has lived or worked in Andes. A banquet will follow at the Bobcat ski center. Participants are encouraged to bring a dish to pass.

Glimmerglass Triathlon slated for Sunday

The 23rd annual Glimmerglass Triathlon is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start for canoes at 9 a.m. Sunday at Glimmerglass State Park in Cooperstown.

The event consists of a 5-mile canoe sprint, a 26-mile bicycle trek and a 5-mile run. Registration is limited to the first 150 entrants. Solo, two-, three-, and four-person teams are encouraged to participate.

U17 girls select soccer tryouts start Sunday

The Oneonta Soccer Club will hold tryouts for a U17 Girls Select Team at 5 p.m. Sunday and Aug. 28 at Catella Field in Neahwa Park.

The OSC is developing a regional select girls team to be coached by Oneonta State graduate and Laurens junior varsity girls soccer coach Amy DuCharme. This team will enter tournaments and play Division 1 in the Albany or Binghamton spring leagues.

Tryouts are open to all girls ages 16-17 who live in Otsego, Delaware and Chenango counties.

Archery shoots begin Sunday in Oxford

The Oxford Rod & Gun Club will hold its 2005 archery shoots Sunday, Sept. 18 and Oct. 9. Registration runs from 7-11 a.m. each date.

Entry fees are $8 for adults, $5 for juniors (ages 12-16) and free for children younger than age 12. Competitions will be held in seven shooting classes — open, release, fingers, women, traditional, youth and cubs.

Oneonta natives to meet in soccer Friday

Oneonta native Dean Foti will coach the Division I Syracuse men’s soccer team against Oneonta High graduate Mark Deemer and Binghamton during the 2005 Collegiate Soccer Preview at the David L. Emerson Soccer Farm in Oxford.

The fourth annual event starts at 5:15 p.m. Friday on a $750,000 multi-field soccer complex that is being developed by the Chenango Chargers’ Soccer Club.

Syracuse finished 5-12 last fall under Foti, who is entering his 15th year of coaching. Deemer helped Binghamton to an 11-2-8 record during his freshman season last fall.

Keystone College, based in Scranton, Pa., will play Ithaca in a Division III match at 1 p.m. Aug. 28. Keystone is coached by third-year coach Winga Siwale, who played for Foti. Keystone went 11-9-1 last year. Andy Byrne is entering his 21st year coaching at Ithaca, which went 12-3-2 in 2004.

Black bear forum set for Aug. 27 in Woodgate

New York State’s 2005 Black Bear Forum starts with presentations at 10 a.m. Aug. 27 at the White Otter Fish and Game Club in Woodgate, about 33 miles north of Utica.

Mounted bears will be on display for the event, which lasts until mid-afternoon. A black bear specialist from the Department of Environmental Conservation will hold a question-and-answer session as well.

A $4 donation includes lunch and a chance at door prizes.

Open water swim Aug. 27 at Gilbert Lake

Gilbert Lake State Park will play host to a open water swim at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. Warm-ups are set for 9 a.m.

The event has three divisions and is open to all US Masters Swimming-registered swimmers ages 18 or older. Those who are not registered with the USMS can purchase a one-day membership for $15.

Cost is $12 if registration material is received by Sunday, $15 from Aug. 22-26, and $20 the day of the event. Each athlete is asked to bring a dish to pass for the post-race picnic.

Bovina Fire Dept. golf tournament Aug. 27

The ninth annual Bovina Fire Department captain-and-crew golf tournament is set for Aug. 27 at the Delhi College Golf Course.

Soccer Hall inductions Aug. 28-29

The National Soccer Hall of Fame will hold its 2005 Induction Weekend on Aug. 28-29 in Oneonta.

Former professional soccer players Marcelo Balboa, John Harkes and Tab Ramos will join builder Hank Steinbrecher and Veterans’ selection Fernando Clavijo during the Induction Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 29. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

The Hall of Fame Game between D.C. United and the Colorado Rapids follows the ceremony at 1 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Wright National Soccer Campus.

Student-athletes cannot practice without a completed sports physical, which is mandatory each year, and a returned sports physical form.

Sportswriter to sign book at Baseball Hall

Sports columnist Maury Allen will sign copies of his new book, "Brooklyn Remembered: The 1955 Days of the Dodgers," on Sept. 3 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Hall of Fame Fantasy Camp to run Oct. 5-9

The first Hall of Fame Fantasy Baseball Camp will run Oct. 5-9 at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.

Hall of Famers George Brett, Lou Brock, Phil Niekro and Duke Snider will lead the five-day camp, which includes accommodations at the Otesaga Hotel, golf at Leatherstocking Golf Course, a private tour of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and a private dinner in the Hall of Fame Gallery.

Former major league players Dave Bergman, Carl Erskine, Joe Niekro, Jamie Quirk, Jon Warden and Maury Wills also will participate. The camp offers games each day at Doubleday Field.

Hunting, fishing licenses available

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is offering 2005-2006 hunting, fishing and trapping licenses and Deer Management Permits.

Licenses and permits can be purchased at one of DEC’s 1,600 license sales outlets statewide. They can also be ordered by mail and by phone. All sporting licenses are valid from Oct. 1, 2005 to Sept. 30, 2006.
