Bases-loaded single sinks O-Tigers in 10th
O-TIGERS ’05
Staff Report
Francisco Plasencia’s two-out single with bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th scored Lorvin Louisa with the winning run as host Vermont rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Oneonta Tigers on Friday.
The loss bumped Oneonta (33-23) out of the Stedler Division lead as Lowell took over by a half-game. The Spinners (34-23), who have won five straight, beat Tri-City, 4-3.
The Expos (20-38) have the worst record in the New York-Penn League. At 21-10, Oneonta has the best road record in the league.
The O-Tigers play Vermont at 7:05 p.m. Saturday and 5:05 p.m. Sunday to wrap up a four-game series. After a two-day All-Star break, the Tigers return home to play host to a double-header with Tri-City at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Oneonta rallied from a 3-0 deficit Friday with four runs in the eighth. Vermont sent the game into extra innings with a run in the ninth, but Oneonta took the lead in the 10th.
William Rhymes led off the inning with a single to center. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Matt Joyce. Justin Justice followed with a groundout to first, putting Rhymes on third. Cory Middleton then hit his 18th double of the season, scoring Rhymes for a 5-4 lead.
Mike Daniel led off Vermont’s half of the 10th with a single off reliever Loren Fraser (2-2). John Poppert followed with a sacrifice bunt and Louisa tied the score with an RBI single. Jose Contreras singled to put runners at first and second, and Andrew Lane walked to load the bases.
Fraser struck out Leonard Davis before Plasencia lined a walk-off single to right.
Jeff Larish led off Oneonta’s at-bats in the eighth with a homer to right, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Mark Haske followed with a double to right and Jeramy Laster singled to put runners at the corners.
Laster was then caught trying to steal second. Pitcher Carlos Martinez followed with a wild pitch that scored Haske. A walk to Schuyler Williamson chased Martinez.
Rhymes singled to center off reliever Edward Rodriguez and, after Joyce flew out to second, Justin Justice hit a two-run double to center for a 4-3 Oneonta lead.
Vermont tied the score in the ninth off Fraser. Davis tripled to lead off and scored when Plasencia flew out to left.
Outfielder Pedro Cotto, who hit .276 (8-for-29) in nine games with Oneonta, was called up to Single-A Lakeland on Friday. Cotto had a double, triple and five RBIs for the O-Tigers.
Oneonta placed right-handed starting pitcher Guillermo Moscoso on the disabled list Friday. Moscoso is 2-2 with a 4.23 ERA for the Tigers in 44 2/3 innings. In 10 starts, he’s walked nine and struck out 41.
