O-Tigers finish job to earn sweep

O-TIGERS ’05

By P.J. Harmer

Staff Writer

ONEONTA — Burke Badenhop had a complete performance for the Oneonta Tigers on Wednesday.

Badenhop limited Tri-City to five hits over seven shutout innings to lead the O-Tigers to a 4-0 victory and a double-header sweep in front of 2,121 at Damaschke Field.

Oneonta won the opener, 2-1, in eight innings. The first game was a continuation of a suspended game July 31.

Badenhop struck out three and threw 51 of 89 pitches for strikes in the complete-game victory.

"Your goal is to throw seven innings every time out," said right-hander Badenhop, who improved to 4-4. "I felt pr[an error occurred while processing this directive]etty good — a little rusty because I got an extra couple of days off because of the All-Star break."

The only trouble Badenhop faced came in the sixth inning. Thomas Manzella led off with a bloop single to center and Eric King followed with a grounder to third that took a hard bounce over Cory Middleton.

However, Badenhop then got Luke Barganier to bounce into a 3-6-1 double play. Neil Sellers ended the inning by popping out to second.

"That was a huge double play," Badenhop said. "The baseball gods were fair that inning."

Oneonta’s defense proved key all game. Right fielder Matt Joyce and left fielder Leo Grullon each had diving catches, center fielder Jeramy Laster made a sprinting over-the-head catch, and first baseman Jeff Larish came up with a sliding catch in foul territory.

"It’s one of those nights where it’s pitching and defense," Brookens said. "We’ve been playing really good defense lately."

The O-Tigers (37-23) play host to Tri-City at 7 tonight. Oneonta leads the Stedler Division by three games over Lowell, which lost to Vermont, 12-11, in 10 innings. Sendy Vasquez (5-0, 3.71 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Oneonta tonight.

Oneonta gave Badenhop a cushion in the first inning.

Jorge Patino singled to lead off but was forced out at second when Matt Joyce grounded to second. Joyce took second on a wild pitch.

After Michael Hollimon struck out swinging for the second out, Jeff Larish walked to put runners on first and second. Ryan Roberson followed with a double to center, scoring Joyce and Larish to make it 2-0.

"The first pitch was a change-up and I worked off that," Roberson said. "A lot of teams like to double up (pitches). I was looking change, got it in the middle in and put a good swing on it."

The Tigers added two runs in the fifth. Joyce walked with one out and scored when Hollimon hit his league-leading ninth triple. Larish grounded to first for the second out and Roberson followed with a single to score Hollimon.

"He had a real nice night," Brookens said of Roberson. "He’s got a couple of games where he’s hit the ball well."

Hollimon and Roberson finished with two hits apiece for the Tigers.

Joyce’s RBI single with one out in the bottom of the eighth scored Will Rhymes for a victory in the opener.

The game was a continuation from July 31. Oneonta led, 1-0, to start the game.

Tri-City’s Neil Sellers scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to tie it.

Rhymes reached on a shortstop Thomas Manzella to start the eighth, and Rhymes moved to second on Mark Haske’s sacrifice bunt.

After Hollimon was intentionally walked, Joyce hit a hard grounder to center on a 1-2 pitch to score Rhymes from second.

"I fouled one off and was kind of trying to think of what he would throw," Joyce said. "He threw an off-speed pitch and luckily I got the job done. Rhymes, with his good speed, was able to score.

"It was a rush to come in a game-winning situation and come through."

Matt Norfleet (1-1) earned the victory in relief. Jose Fragoso started and allowed six hits and no unearned runs in seven innings.
