Open water swim Saturday at Gilbert Lake

Gilbert Lake State Park will play host to a open water swim at 10 a.m. Saturday. Warm-ups are set for 9 a.m.
The event has three divisions and is open to all US Masters Swimming-registered swimmers ages 18 or older. Those who are not registered with the USMS can purchase a one-day membership for $15.
Cost is $15 from today through Friday and $20 Saturday. Each athlete is asked to bring a dish to pass for the post-race picnic.

Milford bowling league starts soon
The Friday Night Men’s League seeks individual bowlers and teams for the upcoming season. The league competes at 7 p.m. Friday nights at Milford Lanes this fall.

Black bear forum Saturday in Woodgate
New York State’s 2005 Black Bear Forum starts with presentations at 10 a.m. Saturday at the White Otter Fish and Game Club in Woodgate, about 33 miles north of Utica.
Mounted bears will be on display for the event, which lasts until mid-afternoon. A black bear specialist from the Department of Environmental Conservation will hold a question-and-answer session as well.
A $4 donation includes lunch and a chance at door prizes.

Big ball softball tournament set for Saturday
A men’s 16-inch big ball softball tournament is scheduled for Saturday at the Otego Little League fields. The tournament is limited to 10 teams, with the top three earning cash prizes and trophies.

Bovina Fire Dept. golf tournament Saturday
The ninth annual Bovina Fire Department captain-and-crew golf tournament is set for Saturday at the Delhi College Golf Course.
Cost is $280 per foursome and includes greens fees, cart, on-course beverages, dinner and prizes. Extra dinners can be purchased for $15 each.

Unadilla RDC golf tournament Saturday
The Unadilla Recreation Development Council is holding its second annual captain-and-crew golf tournament Saturday at the Hardwood Hills Golf Course.

Milford Academy announces football schedule
Milford Academy in New Berlin opens its 2005 football schedule at noon Saturday at Morrisville. Milford plays 13 games this fall, including a 1 p.m. meeting Sept. 10 with the junior varsity team at Hartwick College.

U17 girls select soccer tryouts start Sunday
The Oneonta Soccer Club will hold tryouts for a U17 Girls Select Team at 5 p.m. Sunday at Catella Field in Neahwa Park.
The OSC is developing a regional select girls team to be coached by Oneonta State graduate and Laurens junior varsity girls soccer coach Amy DuCharme. This team will enter tournaments and play Division 1 in the Albany or Binghamton spring leagues.
Tryouts are open to all girls ages 16-17 who live in Otsego, Delaware and Chenango counties.

Soccer Hall Induction Weekend starts Sunday
The National Soccer Hall of Fame will hold its 2005 Induction Weekend on Sunday and Monday in Oneonta.
Former professional soccer players Marcelo Balboa, John Harkes and Tab Ramos will join builder Hank Steinbrecher and Veterans’ selection Fernando Clavijo during the Induction Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Monday. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
The Hall of Fame Game between D.C. United and the Colorado Rapids follows the ceremony at 1 p.m. Monday at the Wright National Soccer Campus.
The second annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament and the President’s reception/dinner are scheduled for Saturday.

Bowling league meeting set for Tuesday
The Tuesday Night Mixed League will have a meeting for the upcoming fall season at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta. New bowlers and teams are welcome to attend.
OHS to start modified practices Thursday
Oneonta High will begin its modified fall sports practices Thursday at the following times and locations:
Modified Football (3 p.m.): at OHS.
Boys Soccer (3:15 p.m.): at Riverside Elementary.
Girls Swimming (2:30 p.m.): at OHS.
Modified cross country will practice at 8 a.m. Sept. 2 at OHS. Modified girls soccer will have a meeting at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at OHS.

Unatego modified practices begin Thursday
Modified fall sports practices for Unatego run from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, with parents meetings to follow. Cross country and football will practice at Unatego High, boys soccer will be at Otego Elementary and girls soccer will be at Unadilla Elementary.
Student-athletes cannot practice without a completed sports physical, which is mandatory each year, and a returned sports physical form.
Sportswriter to sign book at Baseball Hall
Sports columnist Maury Allen will sign copies of his new book, "Brooklyn Remembered: The 1955 Days of the Dodgers," on Sept. 3 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
Allen will lead a discussion and sign his book to start the "1955 Dodgers Celebration Weekend" at 11 a.m. The cost of the book is $24.95 and will be available for purchase at the Hall.
Race weekend scheduled for Labor Day
From Sept. 3-5, Skaneateles will play host to its Labor Day Race Weekend from Sept. 3-5. The schedule is as follows:
Sept. 3: Skinnyman Triathlon (800-yard swim, 14-mile bicycle race, 3.1 mile run).
Sept. 4: Open water swim (1-mile in Skaneateles Lake).
Sept. 5: Labor Day 5-mile road race; Splash Dash ¾-mile kids fun run.
