Joyce keys 7-6 victory

Larish homers again

O-TIGERS ’05

Staff Report

Matt Joyce finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the host Oneonta Tigers to a 7-6 victory over the Vermont Expos in front of 1,357 Saturday at Damaschke Field.

Joyce’s two-run double capped a four-run fourth inning to help the Tigers erase a 4-1 deficit en route to their seventh straight victory. Oneonta (41-23) made it eight in a row Sunday with a 4-0 defeat of Vermont.

Matt Norfleet (2-1) earned the victory for the Tigers, pitching 3 1/3 shutout innings of hitless relief. He struck out five and walked one.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Despite allowing two runs on two hits in the last two innings, Anthony Claggett earned his seventh save of the season. He struck out two and walked one.

Cory Middleton reached on a fielding error by second baseman Brandon Conway to lead off Oneonta’s at-bats in the fourth. He moved to second on a single to right by Mark Haske before Brandon Timm walked to load the bases.

After Joel Roa popped out to short, Will Rhymes singled to center to score Middleton and Haske. Rhymes and Timm, who took second and third, respectively, when the ball got past center fielder Francisco Plasencia, scored on Joyce’s double to right. Joyce, who gave Oneonta the lead for good at 5-4, was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple.

Jeff Larish hit his fifth homer since joining the O-Tigers on Aug. 18 in the fifth, and Joyce capped the Oneonta scoring with an RBI single in the sixth for a 7-4 lead.

Plasencia plated the final runs with a two-run, two-out single in the ninth. Claggett got Louisa to fly out to right to end the game.

Rhymes finished with two hits and two RBIs for Oneonta, which got two RBIs from Larish.

NOTES: O-Tigers infielder Jorge Patino was called up to Double-A Erie on Friday. Patino batted .263 (21-for-80) and scored 14 times in 26 games for Oneonta.
