Rockets flash past Laurens in Stamford Cup final

Oneonta falls, 4-0, in Hall consolation

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER

Staff Report

Roxbury scored twice in a four-minute span in the second half to defeat Laurens, 2-0, in the final of the Stamford Mayor’s Cup on Saturday.

Shane Hubbard and Tim Corbalis had goals for the Rockets, who improved to 7-1.

After a scoreless first half, Steven Hubbard was tripped from behind in the Laurens penalty box nine minutes into the second half. Shane Hubbard, Steven’s older brother, took the penalty kick and scored to the right as Leopards goalie Aaron Laing slipped.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Four minutes later, a throw-in bounced across the crease and Corbalis headed the ball to the far post from the left wing.

"There were a lot of people watching and Tim came right through," Rockets coach Tom Faraci said. "We had momentum after the first goal, and the game kind of escalated from there. It was definitely a close match."

Lucas Flachs made eight saves for the Rockets, including a backpedaling stop with a minute left. A ball skimmed off the head of sweeper Allen Keator and over Flachs. However, Flachs jumped backward and tipped the ball wide.

Faraci said he used Anthony Camillone to shadow Laurens standout Greg Breuer, who entered the game with eight goals.

"Breuer has everything," Faraci said. "He’s fast and has great footwork. We put Camillone on him and I think he kept him in check."

Flachs, Keator, Shane Hubbard and Camillone earned all-tournament honors for Roxbury, along with Breuer and sweeper Ryan Healt of Laurens.

The Rockets, whose only loss came in their season opener to Milford, play host to Windham today.
