Hoover needs one more for record

Ties retired Tioga coach for most triumphs in Section Four as Walton edges SW, 22-20

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Staff Report

Jim Hoover is one victory away from a state title.

Richard Fletcher’s two-point conversion run in the fourth quarter Saturday lifted Walton to a 22-20 non-conference football triumph over Sullivan West. It also led to career victory No. 232 for Hoover, tying him with retired Tioga coach Jim Haggerty for the most Section Four victories all-time.

Hoover can claim the section record this Friday night, when Walton takes on Hancock in a Section Four Division VII game. Hancock fell, 47-12, to host Bainbridge-Guilford on Saturday.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]"I know I’ve had a lot of great coaches and a lot of great kids," said Hoover, who is 232-55-1 in 30 seasons. "It didn’t come overnight. The key thing to our success in Walton is the program we have. We work on it all the way up through. The same system is taught all the way up. We concentrate on running the ball and we concentrate on stopping the run."

Fletcher paced the Warriors (3-0) with 84 rushing yards on 18 carries. His conversion run followed a 26-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Holley to John Talbot and put Walton ahead, 22-14.

Sullivan West (1-2), which opened the season with a 62-6 home loss to Delhi, scored the final points on a 56-yard TD pass from Jim Maloney to Matt Forster. Walton stopped a two-point conversion run to clinch the victory.

"It was close," Hoover said of the conversion attempt. "They were on the 1-foot-line. They just kept hanging in."

Kirby Fletcher and Robert McLachlan finished with 73 rushing yards apiece, and Sean Fisher amassed 64 on four carries for the Warriors.

Holley opened the scoring with a 15-yard run in the first quarter, but Walton trailed, 14-6, at the half. McLachlan’s 1-yard TD run in the third quarter pulled the Warriors within 14-12 before Kirby Fletcher tied the score with a successful conversion run.
