Davenport boys knock off Roxbury; Downsville wins

The number of Delaware League boys soccer unbeatens is down to one.

Brandon Hitchcock and Mark Utter scored Thursday to lift Davenport past Roxbury, 2-1, in a matchup of DL powers.

The Upper Division-leading Wildcats (5-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 league) gave the Rockets (7-2, 3-1) their first league loss of the season. Downsville (8-2, 4-0) moved into first place in the Mountain Division with its 2-1 victory over South Kortright.

Hitchcock won a ball in front off Nate Lorber’s cross and scored with 28 minutes, 44 seconds left in the first half. Utter, a reserve defender, made it 2-0 nine minutes into the second half, when he took a pass from Brandon Butts and scored from 16 yards.

"Our defense was phenomenal," Davenport coach Jennifer Henderson said. "We kept our marks the whole game. I would say this was the best game we’ve played overall this year."

Hitchcock and Lorber keyed the midfield play, Henderson said, sticking with Roxbury standouts Shane Hubbard and John Skipper.

Brandon Cuddy made eight saves for Davenport, which plays Cooperstown in the Chic Walshe Tournament on Saturday.

Downsville 2, SK 1

Brett Reed scored off a cross from Dusty Haynes with 1:40 left as host Downsville stayed unbeaten in the Delaware League.

Haynes’ pass from the left wing found Reed open in front, and Reed put it in for his eighth goal of the year.

Brian Komosinski put the Rams ahead in the first half, and Downsville tied it when Lucas Shaw headed in Reed’s corner kick early in the second half.

"They were beating us to the ball," Eagles coach Scott Reed said of SK. "We were not playing real well in the first half. You gotta give credit to (Rams coach) Bob (VanValkenburgh)."

Downsville (8-2, 4-0) moved into first place in the Mountain Division because Roxbury lost to Davenport, 2-1. The Rockets dropped to 3-1 in league. The Eagles play Roxbury on Oct. 11.

Margaretville 2, Jefferson 0

Shadow Williams scored the decisive goal on a 1-on-1 against Jefferson goalie Eli Jacobson with 25:09 left in the first half, helping Margaretville to a Delaware League victory on the road.

Jacobson broke through the Jayhawks’ defense and chipped a shot over Jacobson, who went to the ground in an attempt to smother the opportunity.

Sean Hernandez contributed a second-half goal for the Blue Devils, who outshot Jefferson, 22-5.

Jefferson is at H-T on Monday.

Mike Winner scored three times, and Ethan Berghammer had a goal and an assist as host Andes defeated Windham in a Delaware League game.

Dylan Knapp contributed two assists for the Mountaineers, who finished with 34 shots. Kyle LaPierre scored for Windham.

Andes (5-2-1, 3-1-1) plays host to Downsville on Tuesday.

Chris Statts scored four times and had two assists to lead Hunter-Tannersville to a Delaware League victory over host Gilboa. Greg Mudge and Justin Nadeau each finished with a goal and an assist for H-T.

Austin Donisan and Nick Alley scored for Gilboa (3-6, 1-3), which plays at Roxbury on Tuesday.

Mike Guerriere scored three goals and assisted on another to lead Sidney to a Midstate Athletic Conference victory at Greene.

Mike Hinsch contributed a goal and an assist for the Warriors, who remained a half-game behind first-place Unadilla Valley in the MAC.

Mike Porter scored a second-half goal for Greene.

The Warriors (6-1-1, 5-0-1) play host to Oxford at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Joe Bunzey’s goal with 9:12 to go in the first half lifted the host Crimson Knights to a MAC tie.

Bunzey, who started the season as a goalkeeper, scored Afton’s first goal of the season when Don Hatton’s free kick went through the hands of Spartans keeper Randy Murwin. Bunzey was there to tap it in.

David Havens scored two minutes into the game for Unatego.

Afton (0-7-1, 0-5-1) plays host to Walton on Saturday.

Juston Parks broke a scoreless tie 11 minutes into the second half off a pass from Brooks, and Zack Thomsen made it 2-0 six minutes later.

UV (7-0-1, 6-0-1) visits Unatego on Saturday.

Colin Bliss had three goals and an assist as host Edmeston topped its scoring output from its previous five games combined in a Tri-Valley League victory.

James Slentz scored his first two goals of the season for the Panthers (6-2-1, 2-1-1), who were coming off a 0-0 tie with Milford. Edmeston totaled six goals in its last five games.

"We finished a lot better," Edmeston coach Jim Huntington said. "And it was big for James to break the ice."

The Panthers have a big week ahead of them, starting with a home game against Laurens on Monday. Edmeston then plays host to G-MU on Wednesday and visits the Raiders on Friday. Laurens and G-MU are tied atop the West Division at 4-1.

Philip Schultes stopped two shots to earn the shutout for Milford, which is ninth in the latest Class D state rankings.

Morris (1-7, 1-5) plays at Schenevus on Tuesday.

Sophomore Drew Lierheimer’s first varsity goal propelled visiting Cooperstown to a Center State Conference victory.

Lierheimer headed in Peter Coccoma’s throw-in two minutes into the game as the Redskins (6-1, 6-0) remained undefeated in the CSC. Waterville fell to 1-6.

Jason Conklin made three saves for Cooperstown.

Greg Breuer’s goal six minutes into the game proved the difference as host Laurens handed the Raiders their first league loss of the season Wednesday.

Breuer headed in a cross from Adam Mish for his area-leading 13th goal. Aaron Laing made three saves for the shutout. Laurens coach Dave Miller said his team keyed on Raiders standout Jon Marble (10 goals on season) and used a double sweeper late in the game.

The Leopards (6-2, 4-1) pulled into a first-place tie with G-MU (6-3, 4-1) in the West Division.
