O-State women win key SUNYAC game away, 2-0

AREA COLLEGE ROUNDUP

Staff Report

The Oneonta State women’s soccer team seems to be rounding into form.

The Red Dragons earned their third straight victory by downing host Plattsburgh, 2-0, in a SUNY Athletic Conference game Friday.

Junior Leslie Small and freshman Sarah Begley scored as O-State (6-1-1, 4-0) increased its NCAA-record conference unbeaten streak to 76 games. The Red Dragons are 5-0-1 since a 3-0 loss to Johns Hopkins on Sept. 4.

Small made it 1-0 in the 28th minute when she knocked in a rebound off the post. It was Small’s seventh goal of the season.

"It was one of the best goals I’ve seen," O-State coach Tracey Ranieri said. "She just pounded it into the net."

Laura Morcone made two saves for the shutout. The Red Dragons outshot the Cardinals, 15-6.

"We played really well in the air," Ranieri said. "Tricia Jaeger dominated the center of the field, and that let us control the game."

Plattsburgh, which was the only SUNYAC team other than O-State to receive a first-place vote in the preseason coaches poll, dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The Red Dragons visit Potsdam (0-6-2, 0-3) on Saturday.
