Hartwick men defeat Portland

HARTWICK MEN’S SOCCER

Freshman J.P. Boyle scored the winner in the 29th minute Friday to give the Hartwick men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over the University of Portland at the Husky Fever Classic at the University of Washington.

Chris Sardon took a corner kick from the left side that Chris Jackson flicked to Boyle at the far post. Boyle knocked it in for his fourth goal of the season.

"It was a good ball from Sardon that Jacko got at the near post, it came to me, right place, right time, quick reflexes," said Boyle, whose team improved to 5-2.

Boyle set up the Hawks’ first goal, sending a diagonal ball through to Jackson, who scored in the 10th minute.

Portland (1-3) answered in the 19th minute on Michael Gavin’s header off a corner kick.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]"We played some good stuff in the first half," Hartwick coach Ian McIntyre said. "We moved the ball around."

Portland outshot Hartwick, 19-6, in the game. Junior goalie Josh Wagenaar made nine saves for the Hawks.

"They came out very strong in the first five or 10 minutes of the second half," said McIntyre. "We made a couple of changes to the lineup and Josh made a couple of big saves for us. It was a gutty performance by our guys."

Hartwick faces host Washington at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
