It took Mike Guerriere 1½ seasons to break the most prestigious record in Sidney boys soccer history.
Freshman Guerriere became the Warriors’ all-time leading scorer Saturday, finishing with three goals in a 6-1 victory over visiting Oxford in a Midstate Athletic Conference game.
Teammate Mike Hinsch joined Guerriere in the record book, assisting on four goals to break Sidney’s all-time assist mark.
Mike Graham, a 2001 graduate, held the old records with 42 goals and 38 assists over five varsity seasons.
Guerriere increased his all-time goal total to 45 in 28 games. He entered Saturday’s game tied with Graham, the last Sidney ei[an error occurred while processing this directive]ghth-grader called up to varsity. Guerriere has scored three goals in each of his last three games.
"We knew Mike was going to get there, but we didn’t realize it was going to happen this quick," Sidney coach Steve Hornung said. "He’s had so many goals this last week."
Guerriere broke the record three minutes into Saturday’s game, heading in a corner kick by Hinsch.
"It just shows how good of an all-around player he is," Hornung said. "He can score with his head, he can score with both feet and he can score with his speed. And he has strength in traffic. It just shows how diverse he is."
Guerriere had a Sidney single-season record 27 goals as a eighth-grader in earning Daily Star First-Team All-Star honors.
"We don’t move players up all that often" Hornung said. "I’m very surprised this happened so quickly. We’re talking about 21 years of Sidney soccer history, so these records aren’t easy to break. If Mike stays healthy, it’s going to be difficult to break his record by the time he’s done. It’s going to be one of those Joe DiMaggio or Cy Young records."
Senior Hinsch, a third-year varsity player, entered Saturday with 36 assists. He broke the record on his third assist, when he set up Guerriere with a pass in front. Hinsch also was a Daily Star first-teamer last year, when he had 15 goals and 22 assists. The assist total was a single-season Sidney record.
"They have a lot of faith in each other," Hornung said. "Sometimes offensive players can be selfish, but neither is. They know when to shoot and when to pass."
Hinsch, who has 116 all-time points, is also closing in on Graham’s record of 122. Hinsch is third all-time (behind Guerriere and Graham) with 38 goals. Guerriere has 100 points.
