Women’s soccer dropped by top-ranked Mohawk

Lindsay Vatalaro had a goal and an assist Monday to lead Mohawk Valley Community College to a 4-0 women’s soccer victory over host Cobleskill.

Monica Cieslak, Pamela Wilday and Megan Primeau also scored for Mohawk Valley (10-0 overall, 2-0 Mountain Valley Conference), which is ranked first among NJCAA Division III teams.

"They’ve only given up two goals this season," Cobleskill sports information director Mitch Tomaszkiewicz said. "You’re not No. 1 in the country because you’re bad."

After winning a national title in 2003, Mohawk Valley finished as the NJCAA Division III runner-up last season.

Wildey Joseph scored off a scramble in front 20 minutes into the second half as Mohawk Valley CC downed visiting Cobleskill (5-4-1) in a Mountain Valley Conference game Monday.

Joe Adamiak made seven saves for the Fighting Tigers, who had a 14-11 shot advantage.

Cobleskill 6, North Country 1

The Fighting Tigers (5-3-1) extended their unbeaten streak to five games with a non-conference road rout Saturday.

"In the second half, we really stepped up the level of our game," said Cobleskill coach Rob Szmarz, whose team scored four goals after halftime. "This was an important victory for us to have as we start to look at a potential playoff bid."

Freshman Hugh Campbell paced Cobleskill with two goals, and seniors Devin Stickle (Downsville), Carlos Perez and Mike Brower each finished with a goal and an assist

Matt Graham also scored for Cobleskill, which got two assists from Don Harrison and one assist apiece from Justin Hines, Josh Cookfair and Christian Velasquez.

Freshman Joe Adamiak earned his first collegiate victory with seven saves for the Fighting Tigers.

Christina Gray helped Cobleskill (3-2) to two points Monday at Broome with a victory at No. 1 singles before joining Tina Andrako for a triumph at No. 1 doubles.

Gray did the same Saturday, winning at first singles and teaming with Andrako for a victory at first doubles, in Cobleskill’s 5-4 victory over visiting Herkimer.

Volleyball

Cobleskill honors hitter

SUNY-Cobleskill named freshman volleyball player Cassie Putnam its athlete of the week Monday.

Putnam, an outside hitter, earned all-tournament honors during the Cobleskill Invitational this past weekend, when she averaged 6.2 kills and 10.0 digs. Led by Putnam, the Fighting Tigers went 4-1 at the tournament and finished second.

Becky Hankle also earned all-tournament honors for Cobleskill, which fell, 30-21, 25-30, 15-12, to Mohawk Valley in the final.

Barb Pagillo had 14 aces and three kills to lead Delhi Tech (2-10), which went 0-3 at the invitational.

Cobleskill (14-3, 2-0 MVC) is ranked fourth in the latest NJCAA Division III poll and first in the NJCAA Region III Division III Coaches Poll.

The Fighting Tigers play host to Adirondack in a Mountain Valley Conference match at 7 tonight. Delhi plays host to Tompkins-Cortland Community College at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Bard Invitational

Cobleskill senior Rachael Prehna (Stamford) finished a 6,000-meter course in 27 minutes, 26 seconds, earning 16th place out of 85 runners with the second-fastest junior college time Saturday.

Freshman Creig Levens paced the Fighting Tigers’ men on an 8,000-meter course with a third-place finish among 98 runners in 27:44.
