Andes boys knock off Downsville
BOYS SOCCER ROUNDUP
Staff Report
Tex Murray didn’t need a lot of room Tuesday.
Murray scored with one minute remaining to give host Andes a 5-4 victory over Downsville in a key Delaware League boys soccer game.
Murray intercepted a back pass intended for Downsville goalie Vito Cassella and shot from the edge of the 18-yard line. about two feet from end line. The ball rolled into the corner of the net.
"The angle he was on, it was a very hard degree of difficulty," Andes coach Andy Gates said. "He had an open net, but it was very difficult."
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Murray finished with two goals and Mike Winner scored three times for the Mountaineers (6-2-1, 4-1-1). Adam Barrett made 14 saves in goal.
Downsville (9-3, 5-1) led, 3-1, early in the second half. But Winner and Murray scored to tie it, and Winner scored again with 20 minutes remaining for a 4-3 lead.
"We played better defense in the second half and better defense leads to better chances," said Gates, who added midfielder Casey Sidorowicz, stopper Josh Weaver and sweeper Ryan Little were keys on defense. "We switched our marks a little more. (Sidorowicz, Weaver and Little) were probably the difference in the game. They really stepped up in the second half. We did a much better job limiting their chances, which helped us offensively."
Lucas Shaw tied the score with 5:30 remaining for Downsville, which got a goal and an assist from Brett Reed.
"It was a game of spurts," Gates said. "It kind of went back and forth. Coming back from 3-1 in the second half showed a lot of character. I don’t think if we had overreacted we could have come back from that."
