O-State women’s soccer drops Hartwick, 5-0

OHS graduate Coyle leads Herkimer past Delhi Tech; Hartwick field hockey wins, 3-1

Oneonta State got a fresh start against host Hartwick College on Tuesday.

Freshman forward Christine Marra headed in a corner kick from Colleen Wolbert 1 minute, 3 seconds into a non-conference women’s soccer match, leading the Red Dragons to a 5-0 rout of city-rival Hartwick.

O-State (8-1-1), ranked 24th among NCAA Division III programs, took a 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Tricia Jaeger converted a corner kick from Sarah Tauber.

Mary Velan (Stamford) helped O-State to a 3-0 lead 16 seconds into the second half, crossing to Leslie Small for a goal inside the far post. Velan then converted a penalty kick with a little more than 20 seconds left after beating Hawks goalie Sam Marinelli an[an error occurred while processing this directive]d getting taken down inside the penalty box.

Kirsten Clapper capped the scoring with her first goal this season. Laura Morcone had one save and O-State reserve Jeannine Marra had none in the shutout.

Marinelli, who faced 26 shots, finished with a college-best 14 saves for Hartwick (0-9), which visits Utica for an Empire 8 Conference game at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Oneonta plays host to Geneseo in the SUNY Athletic Conference at 4 p.m. Friday.

Eileen Coyle (Oneonta High) scored midway through the second half to lift Herkimer to a Mountain Valley Conference victory over visiting Delhi.

Coyle intercepted a pass at midfield, penetrated the Broncos defense and beat goalie Bethany Studt to the lower-left corner for the decisive goal.

"There was pressure coming down on her," Delhi coach Bob Leary said, "but she was ahead of the play."

Janine Turcio made 14 saves for Herkimer (8-1), which is ranked third among NJCAA Division III teams and second in Region III.

Studt finished with 14 saves for Delhi (4-2-1, 3-1-1), which plays host to Columbia-Greene on Tuesday.

Field Hockey

Hartwick 3, Elmira 1

Freshman Kate Hadeka’s goal with 32 seconds left in the first half gave Hartwick a 2-0 lead in an Empire 8 game at home. Hadeka scored off of a cross from Molly Joyce.

Jen Ryan opened the scoring off a penalty-corner pass from Jenny Knight with 9:20 left in the first half. Freshman Lindsay Kurtz contributed her first college goal on a penalty stroke with 19:14 to play for a 3-0 lead.

Anne Yager scored for Elmira with 4:02 left.

Hartwick’s Ashley King stopped two shots in 63 minutes. Reserves Jaime Loreto and Emily McLean made no saves.

Women’s Tennis

Union 8, Hartwick 1

Liz Green and Lexi Andrus earned Hartwick’s point against host Union with a victory at No. 3 doubles in a non-conference match. Julie Scarano and Katie Petosa fell at second doubles for their first doubles loss in eight outings this season. Both matches ended at 8-6.

Hartwick (7-3) opens a three-game homestand starting at 4 p.m. Thursday against Empire 8 rival Ithaca. The Hawks are 3-0 in conference play this fall.

Men’s Soccer

Boyle honored by ASC

Hartwick freshman forward JP Boyle earned Atlantic Soccer Conference rookie of the week honors for the week ending this past Sunday.

Boyle, who received the award for the second time this year, scored the winning goal in Hartwick’s 2-1 defeat of Portland last Friday. Boyle also assisted on the first goal of that match.

Boyle is second in conference scoring with 10 points, one behind teammate Austin McCann.

Hartwick (5-3) plays host to Syracuse at 7 tonight. Oneonta native Dean Foti coaches the Orange.
