Sidney girls earn key MAC victory; Rams win

OHS scores twice in second half to top SV

Christine Mirabito scored off an assist from Stephanie Meno with six minutes left Tuesday night as Sidney strengthened its hold on the top spot in the Midstate Athletic Conference with a 3-2 girls soccer victory over visiting Greene.

The Warriors, who gave eighth-year coach Jody Gravelin her 100th victory, extended their winning streak to eight games. Sidney (9-1 overall, 7-0 MAC) also padded its league lead to two games over Greene and Unatego, which are tied for second with 5-2 conference records.

Sidney plays Greene (7-2 overall) and Unatego (6-3) one more time each this season, with a home game against the Spartans set for Sa[an error occurred while processing this directive]turday night.

Mirabito finished with two goals and an assist. Katelyn Guerriere converted a first-half pass from Mirabito to tie the score at 1, then assisted Mirabito 11 minutes into the second half to tie the score at 2.

"This was such a heart-stopping game," Gravelin said. "There were so many close calls on both ends. Amazing saves, shots hitting the post — everything was a close call. It is definitely a good way to get my 100th."

Shelby Averett and Janae Averett scored for Greene.

Sidney plays at Oxford on Thursday.

Brittney O’Brien scored with 7:53 left in the first overtime to lead host Walton to a MAC victory.

Bainbridge-Guilford’s Samantha Spalholz sent the game into overtime when she scored with 1:30 left in regulation. Spalholz finished with a goal and two assists. Marcie Day contributed two goals for the Bobcats.

O’Brien scored three goals to lead the Warriors (2-6, 2-4). Cousin Amy O’Brien had a goal and three assists, including an assist on the winner.

Walton travels to Unatego on Thursday.

Ashley Frederick broke a scoreless tie with 20:34 left in the second half on an unassisted goal that beat SV goalie Lauren Bartlow.

Cassandra Lembo also scored for Oneonta (5-5-1, 4-4-1), which plays at Seton Catholic Central on Thursday.

Bobbi-Jean Bryden scored twice for Morris (2-3-1, 1-3), which plays host to Worcester on Friday.

Melissa Schlobohm scored her second goal of the game with 13 minutes left to break a 3-3 tie, lifting visiting South Kortright to a Delaware League victory over Upper Division leader Margaretville.

Schlobohm entered the game with one goal on the season. She tied the score at 2 five minutes into the second half off a long throw-in from Jessica Laing. Four minutes later, Courtney Laing bent a corner kick in to give the Rams a 3-2 lead.

Midway through the second half, the Blue Devils’ Kirstie Sanford made it 3-3.

Claire Cella had a goal and an assist for Margaretville (7-5, 4-2), which has a one-game lead over Hunter-Tannersville (3-3 league) and 1½-game lead over Davenport (2-3) in the Upper Division. Teams play 10 league games apiece.

Jessica Laing also scored for SK (11-1, 5-1), which bounced back from its 8-1 loss to Downsville on Thursday.
