Primmer hits stride with St. Bonaventure; Compton honored

Oneonta High graduate Mara Primmer is second on the St. Bonaventure Division I women’s soccer team with two goals and four points this season.

Primmer, The Daily Star’s Player of the Year in 2003, has appeared in all eight games as a reserve. The Bonnies are 1-7 after losing to Siena, 5-1, last Wednesday.

Primmer’s teammates include former Maine-Endwell standout Kristin Sotak and Oneonta State transfer Hannah Tigh.

Jen Compton and Bethany Head

Compton (Oneonta High), a senior women’s soccer player at Wilkes University, was named the Freedom Conference Player of th[an error occurred while processing this directive]e Week for the week ending Sept. 18 for scoring the winning goal in two matches.

She scored the first goal in a 3-0 victory over Elmira and a the only goal in a 1-0 triumph over Moravian.

Compton has three goals in nine games for the Colonels.

Sophomore Head (Worcester) has three goals and an assist for Wilkes (9-0).

Geoff Bean

Junior Bean (Oneonta) leads the Colgate football team in all-purpose yards with 265 through three games. The Red Raiders are 1-2.

Bean, a strong safety, has 117 yards on punt returns, 97 on kick returns and a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown. His score came in a 17-14 victory over the University of Massachusetts.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Bean, The Daily Star’s Player of the Year for football in 2002, had two unassisted tackles and three assisted tackles in a 26-21 loss to Dartmouth on Sept. 17.

Brett Sohns

Delhi graduate Sohns is a senior captain for the Iona football team. The Gaels are 2-2.

Sohns, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back, had seven tackles and two assists in a 16-7 victory over Stonehill this past Saturday. He’s third on the team in all-purpose yards with 223 (206 kick returns, 17 interception return).

He also has 26 tackles (18 solo) and two forced fumbles.

Allan Guiney

Freshman Guiney (Cooperstown) took 16th for Hamilton at the Oneonta State Airfield Invitational on Sept. 17.

Guiney was the top finisher for Hamilton for the first time, finishing in 20 minutes, 24 seconds.


Suzi Velan


Senior Velan (Stamford) is a tri-captain for the Le Moyne women’s soccer team. She has a goal and an assist during the Dolphins’ 4-2-1 start. Velan scored in a season-opening 5-1 rout of Goldey-Beacom.

Jessica Talbot

Sophomore Talbot has a goal this season for the Elmira women’s soccer team. She scored in a 3-2 loss to Cortland on Sept. 7. Talbot, a three-time Daily Star first-teamer, has started all eight games for the Soaring Eagles (1-7). They visit Hartwick for an Empire 8 game Oct. 4.

Travis Carey

Junior Carey (Franklin) leads the Potsdam men’s soccer team with two goals and four points this fall. The Bears are 0-6-4.

Carey earned Daily Star First-Team All-Star honors in soccer and basketball as a senior.

Evan Spero

Sophomore Spero (Windham) has helped the College of Saint Rose men’s soccer team match its victory total from 2004. Spero has a goal during the Golden Eagles’ 4-4 start. The team went 4-12-1 last season. Spero was a two-time Daily Star first-teamer.
