Cobleskill falls in regionals

Dwight Barnett had two goals and an assist to lead top-seeded Herkimer to a 5-1 victory over visiting Cobleskill in a quarterfinal of the Region III Tournament on Tuesday.
Eighth-seeded Cobleskill (10-6-1) fell behind, 2-0, in the first half. The Fighting Tigers made it 2-1 when Gilbert Francillon scored off an assist from Hugh Campbell.
Campbell took a shot that went off Herkimer goalie Ryan Brooks-Newman. The ball bounced out to Francillon, who shot it high and in the middle with seven minutes to play in the half.
Scott Bergen made 10 saves for Cobleskill, which was outshot, 22-8.
The Fighting Tigers finished 4-10-1 in 2004 and had the best turnaround in Region III this year. Devin Stickle (Downsville) and Tr[an error occurred while processing this directive]avis White (Sidney) will be lost to graduation.

Hill earns coaching honor
Cobleskill volleyball coach Scott Hill was named the Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year on Tuesday.
The Fighting Tigers (20-4) won their first MVC title since 1998, finishing 7-0 in the conference. Cobleskill also tied the school mark for most victories in a season.
Cobleskill is ranked ninth in the country and seeded third in the Region III Tournament, which will be at Corning CC on Saturday and Sunday.
Carfora top MVC player
Cobleskill freshman volleyball player Amanda Carfora was named the Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Carfora averaged 5.29 kills and 1.05 blocks in 62 games this season. She was the top attacker for the Fighting Tigers and leads the nation in kills per game and is 18th in blocks.
Freshman Cassie Putnam was also named to the All-Conference team. Putnam averaged 3.73 kills and 2.17 digs in 66 games. She also led the team with 50 aces.
