Oneonta wins in OT, 2-1
Greenberg scores first two of season as Jackets upset EFA
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER: SECTIONALS
Staff Report
Oneonta High’s Tim Greenberg has good timing.
Greenberg scored his first two goals of the season, including one with 2 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in sudden-victory overtime, to lead sixth-seeded Oneonta to a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Elmira Free Academy in a Section Four Class A quarterfinal at Owego on Thursday.
Kyle Rowe set up the winner by sending a long ball toward the left side of the 18-yard box, where Aaron Gallusser played it to the middle. Greenberg one-timed Gallusser’s parallel pass from 25 yards for a goal into the upper-left corner.
[an error occurred while processing this directive]"It didn’t seem like anyone was going to score and then he just hit it," OHS coach Alex Brannan said. "Everyone knew. ... Usually in the playoffs, you don’t have other guys come up, it’s the same guys who have scored. It’s nice for him to break the ice."
Greenberg gave the Yellowjackets (6-9-1) a 1-0 lead with 34:28 left in the second half off an assist from Chris Luettger. The Blue Devils tied it three minutes later, when Shane Scott scored off a throw-in.
EFA (2-12-3) had a chance to win it with about 13 minutes to play when the Blue Devils were awarded a penalty kick. However, Oneonta goalie Cory MacDonald dived to his right and stopped the shot by K.J. Mcinerny. The defense then cleared it for MacDonald, who finished with 10 saves.
"(Mcinerny) hit it well to his left and Cory dove the right way and saved it and pushed it out," Brannan said. "It was in the corner and I think Cory read him right and made a great save."
The Yellowjackets outshot EFA, 25-14.
"We had 25 shots and a lot of them were good chances," Brannan said. "It was one of those days where you didn’t know what would happen."
Oneonta travels to second-seeded Maine-Endwell (10-2-2) for a semifinal at noon Saturday. The Yellowjackets were swept by M-E this season, 3-1 on Sept. 17 and 5-2 on Oct. 6.
"We’ve had two good games with them and we’ll see how the third one goes," Brannan said. "We played them differently both times defensive the first and offensive the second time. We know who their key players are. If we can close them down, we have a good chance. Strange things happen in the playoffs."

CLASS C
Delhi 2, Walton 1
Sam Throssell scored the winner on a penalty kick with 2:32 left as Delhi beat Walton for the fourth time this season to advance to the Section Four Class C quarterfinals.
Kyle Cappiello, who scored the first goal with 21 minutes left, drew the penalty when a defender tripped him as he attempted to run across the inside of the box, from left to right. Throssell then converted Delhi’s first penalty kick this season to break a 1-1 tie.
"Sam has got a monster shot," Delhi coach Brian Rolfe said of Throssell, whose other goal this season came off a direct kick. "He’s got a powerful shot."
Throssell missed several games at the start of the season because of injury and ineligibility, the latter because his family arrived in Delhi from Scotland on the first day of play, Rolfe said. Throssell beat Walton goalie Nate Donnelly (four saves) to the lower-left corner for the winner.
Cappiello converted a pass from Eddie Reed for a 1-0 lead before Blake Shaw tied the score on an assist from Joe DeGroat with 11:22 remaining.
Cameron Wentz made 12 saves for sixth-seeded Delhi (11-7-1), which plays No. 3 Odessa-Montour at a neutral site at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
No. 11 Walton finished the season 5-12-2.
"Walton played really well," Rolfe said. They’re a classy team with a classy coach. We swept them four games this year, but it got tougher every game. This was the toughest. They’re much improved."

"One of my guys was crashing lane to an open net, and he laid out in front of the ball and managed to catch it," Munro said of Fahey. "He was on the ground, got up and realized he was burnt, but somehow he got back up. I don’t know what else we could have done."

Boisrand scored off an assist from Miguel Short, who passed it from the 18 to about 10 yards, where Boisrand one-touched it to the left post.
South Kortright tied the score at 1 with 10 minutes to play on a goal from Adam Burns.
"The last 10 minutes was kind of crazy," Laurens coach Dave Miller said. "I think the guys realized if we wanted to keep playing, they had to pick up their game. When they scored, it really fired us up. It made us sit up and start playing."
Boisrand made it 3-1 with five minutes remaining, and Adam Mish finished the scoring with 29 seconds to play.
"It was pretty typical with highs and lows," Miller said. "One team would be putting pressure on and the other team would turn around and put pressure on. It was pretty even for the most part. The last 10 minutes was just wild and crazy."
