Anna Kieler scored with seven minutes remaining in the second half to lead the top-seeded Cooperstown girls soccer team to a 1-0 Section Three Class C Tournament victory over visiting Beaver River on Thursday.
The Redskins (19-0) are the top-ranked Class C team in the state.
Kieler controlled a ball that entered the 18-yard box from the right side and scored into the lower-left corner.
"It was a tough game," Cooperstown coach Jennifer Pindar said. "It was very muddy and a lot of standing water on[an error occurred while processing this directive] the field. It took a while for the girls to adjust to the conditions. They played a great second half."
Cooperstown advances to the semifinals Wednesday, when it will face the winner of today’s game between No. 5 West Canada Valley and No. 4 Utica Notre Dame.
"It was a huge win for us tonight," Pindar said. "I think it will get the girls pumped up to play hard the rest of the season. It’s nice to have a tough game before we get into the semis."
Pindar said the field conditions hampered Cooperstown during the first half.
"It was very hard for us to play our passing game," she said. "It took the girls a good 25 minutes to be able to play their passing game. But it’s given us good experience playing under these conditions."
Cortney Rowley made five saves to earn the shutout for the Redskins. Ninth-seeded Beaver River finished 9-8-2.

SECTION FOUR CLASS B
Sidney 4, Trumansburg 1
Katelyn Guerriere scored three goals and assisted on a fourth to lead fifth-seeded Sidney to a home victory in the first round of the Section Four Class B Tournament.
"She’s been getting a goal here or there," Sidney coach Jody Gravelin said, "but she really came alive tonight, that’s for sure."
The Warriors opened a 3-0 halftime lead on two goals from Guerriere and one from Christine Mirabito, who assisted all three of Guerriere’s goals.
"I think it was plain, old execution," Gravelin said. "They were definitely working well together tonight."
The Warriors (16-2) had an 11-6 advantage in shots. Misty Cotten made five saves.
Sidney lost to Trumansburg in the first round of last year’s tournament. The Blue Raiders finished 6-9-1 this season.
"I told them at the beginning that Trumansburg was out looking for the repeat and I said it wouldn’t happen," Gravelin said. "The girls were pumped up and we had the two-day delay. They showed up to play tonight."
The Warriors travel to fourth-seeded Chenango Forks (11-4) at 3:30 p.m. today.
"I think we have a pretty good shot," Gravelin said. "It will be tough. I haven’t looked beyond that. It’s definitely a big win for us and a confidence-booster, but it’s going to be tough to play back-to-back games."

Cella scored her first goal 1:30 into the second half, then scored a minute later for a 2-0 lead.
Cella’s second goal counted as her 100th in her four varsity seasons.
"They had beat us in the regular season," Margaretville coach Dan Cohen said. "The girls rose to the occasion and played aggressive defensively.
"Even though Claire was double- and triple-teamed, we worked the ball away from her and then back to her," he continued. "To her credit, she scored."

The Blue Devils travel to third-seeded South Kortright at 3:30 p.m. today.

SECTION THREE CLASS D
Defending state champs lose
Defending Class D state champion McGraw fell in the opening round of the Section Three Tournament as the top seed lost, 2-1, in a shootout to No. 16 Hamilton (5-11).
McGraw, which was ranked fifth in the state before the loss, played Hamilton to a 1-1 overtime tie before the decisive shootout.

Section 10’s Chateaugay (16-0) is ranked second in the state this season, one spot behind Delaware League champion and Section Four top seed Downsville (18-0).
