Downsville and Milford are on a crash course to meet in the Section Four Class D girls soccer championship.

Davenport and South Kortright are trying to crash their party, though.

All four teams earned tight quarterfinal victories Friday to advance to the sectional semifinals, which are slated for Tuesday at the Wright National Soccer Campus.

Top-seeded Downsville, the state’s top-ranked team in Class D, beat No. 8 Worcester, 2-0, marking the Eagles’ closest game since a 3-1 victory over Walton on Sept. 10.

Delaware League champion Downsville (19-0) will meet defending Section Four Class D champion Davenport (13-4-1) in the semifinals for the second straight season. Davenport, which beat Tri-Valley League finalist Edmeston, 2-0, in Friday’s quarterfinals, defeated Downsville, 3-2, in overtime in the 2004 semifinals.

No. 3 South Kortright topped Margaretville, 4-2, on Friday, when No. 2 Milford beat Schenevus, 2-1. Margaretville and Schenevus were seeded sixth and seventh, respectively.

Tuesday’s other semifinal between the Rams (16-2, ranked sixth in the state) and the Tri-Valley League champion Wildcats (18-1, ranked fourth) also will be a rematch from the 2004 sectional tournament. SK beat Milford, 3-2, in overtime during last season’s Class D sectional quarterfinals.

SK went on to beat Margaretville on penalty kicks before falling to Davenport, 1-0, in the 2004 sectional championship. Davenport followed with a 5-3 loss to eventual Class D state champion McGraw, which exited the 2005 Section Three Tournament on Thursday. McGraw, the top seed in Section Three, lost a penalty-kick shootout to No. 16 Hamilton on Thursday.

Downsville 2, Worcester 0

Allison Townsend found the upper-left corner from 25 yards for the decisive goal 20 minutes into the opening half of a Section Four Class D quarterfinal.

Courtney Hoyt then converted during a scrum in front of the Worcester goal with 10 seconds left for the final margin as undefeated Downsville moved on to the semifinals.

"They played for the draw," Downsville coach Burt Reed said of the Wolverines (11-6-1), who concentrated on packing the 18-yard box with defenders and were outshot, 15-1. "You have to play that way all year for it to work, and that’s how they play.

"The score easily could have been 0-0, 2-0 or 6-0 — we hit the crossbar twice and were just wide on two crosses — but at no point could it have been 1-0 them," he continued. "They never really attacked us."

Winning goalie Monica Nuzzo stopped Worcester’s only shot, a free kick from the corner-kick area.

"It was a cross," Reed said. "It came across the field and Monica came out, jumped up and took it down. I guess they called it a shot. ... It was their only real legitimate shot at getting a goal."

Although the Wolverines lost, they managed to keep area scoring leader Alexa Henderson without a goal or an assist for the first time this season. Reed said that was the result of constant triple- and quadruple-team coverage of Henderson, who has area bests in goals (42), assists (29) and points (113) this season.

"She’s fine with it," Reed said. "We won and she did a lot of nice things. She said as long as we win, it doesn’t matter. That’s the attitude you have to have."

Henderson still needs to score eight more times to tie the Section Four record for goals in a single season set by Stamford graduate Liz McGrail in the mid-1990s. Henderson’s previous season-low was a two-assist outing in a 4-1 victory over visiting Morris on Sept. 20.

Reed said the semifinal against Davenport will be played at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Downsville beat the Wildcats, 6-1, in their only meeting this season, a Delaware League match on Sept. 12.

DOWNSVILLE 2, WORCESTER 0

SECTION FOUR CLASS D QUARTERFINAL

Worcester 0 0 — 0

Downsville 1 1 — 2

8-Worcester (11-6-1): None.

1-Downsville (19-0): Allison Townsend 1-0, Courtney Hoyt 1-0.

Shots-corners: W 1-3; D 15-11.

Goalies: Emily Bristol (W) 8; Monica Nuzzo (D) 1.

Milford 2, Schenevus 1

Maria Arnot scored 13 minutes into the second half as second-seeded Milford (18-1) advanced to the Section Four Class D semifinals for the first time since 1998.

Arnot broke a 1-1 tie when she took a square pass from Julia Brennan and scored her 36th goal of the season on a low shot from the top of the 18-yard box.

"We showed a lot of character coming back from 1-0, because we haven’t been in that situation much this year," said 12th-year coach Lorin Campbell.

The seventh-seeded Dragons, who lost to the Wildcats twice by 4-0 scores in the regular season, struck first 13:48 into the game. Brianna Bookhout set up Julie Hoepker for a sharp-angle shot from 20 yards that went into the upper-corner.

Milford’s Brenna Campbell answered four minutes later, powering a low shot past Schenevus keeper Alicia Sagendorf, who kept the game close throughout and finished with 13 saves. The Dragons ended the year 11-5-2.

"She saved their butts," Lorin Campbell said of Sagendorf. "She made probably five, maybe six saves that would have been sure goals."

Milford finished with a 20-6 advantage in shots.

"The conditions were very bad," Campbell said. "It was very muddy, and that took us out of our passing game. In the second half, we settled down and had some nice combinations.

"For some reason, winning that first sectional game is always the toughest," he continued.

The Wildcats will play third-seeded South Kortright (15-2) in the sectional semifinals Tuesday at the Wright National Soccer Campus. The Rams beat Milford, 3-2, in overtime in last year’s quarterfinals.

The only other time Campbell coached the Wildcats to the semis came in 1998, when his top-seeded team lost in a shootout to Edmeston. The teams tied, 0-0, after regulation and overtime, marking the third straight scoreless tie between them that year. Those were the only blemishes on Milford’s 17-0-2 finish.

Davenport 2, Edmeston 0

Chelsea Haight scored in the final second of the first half and fourth-seeded Davenport (13-4-1) downed Tri-Valley League West champion Edmeston in a Section Four Class D quarterfinal.

Haight took a through pass from Amanda Toombs, beat a defender and pushed the ball past Edmeston goalie Suellyn Tophoven as the clock expired. Davenport coach Ray Preston said the officials initially called it a goal and conferred with the timekeeper before upholding the decision.

"It was close," Preston said. "The officials did a great job under the circumstances."

With 22:54 left, senior Courtney Adam beat a defender and placed a high shot into the corner to make it 2-0. It was Adam’s team-leading 23rd goal of the season.

"Courtney stepped up, no doubt about it," said Preston, whose team won the sectional title last year but graduated 12 players. "I knew it would be a good game. Courtney and Chelsea did a great job up front. I’m really happy we’re moving on."

Preston, whose team lost to the Panthers, 2-0, in the regular season, dropped Haight back to guard Edmeston standout Erin Olsen with 15 minutes left, and he used Adam as a second sweeper with about seven minutes to go.

Brittany Westcott finished with nine saves, including a punching stop over the net in the final 20 minutes.

Edmeston finished 12-5-2.

Davenport will face top-seeded Downsville (18-0) in a semifinal Tuesday.

SK 4, Margaretville 2

Jessica Laing finished with two goals and an assist as South Kortright staked winning goalie Emily White (eight saves) a 3-0 halftime lead en route to a Section Four Class D quarterfinal victory.

The Rams, whose only losses this season came against league rivals Downsville (8-1) and Davenport (1-0), also received goals from Kelly Peletz and Courtney Laing.

Peletz put SK up, 1-0, by converting a throw-in from Jessica Laing 4:28 into the quarterfinal. Laing scored off a pass from Kassie Tiller 30 seconds later, then put the Rams ahead, 3-0, on a shot from 20 yards at the 25:11 mark.

Christina Gavette scored for Margaretville (13-7) 3:49 into the second half, but Courtney Laing pushed SK’s advantage back to three goals three minutes later. Claire Cella capped the scoring with her final varsity goal at the 34:25 mark. Cella, who has 29 goals this fall, scored 101 times in four seasons for the Blue Devils.

SK will play Milford for the first time this season in the sectional semifinals.

"I expect it to be a good game," said Janet Pittelli, who co-coaches the Rams with Mike Peletz. "They’ve only lost once and we’ve only lost twice, but they haven’t had the pleasure of playing Downsville yet. They could have had two losses (if they did), so it should be a good game."
